Title: You know anything about cats
Post by: hensleyll on March 29, 2021, 09:23:24 am
We have a cat she is about two refuses to go outside, doesn't like kids, and runs from everyone except me, and terrified of my husband. She has eaten all the kid's hampsters .my 11-year-old granddaughter brought her here and now she wants her to go. My thought is she is only doing what a cat is supposed to do and she loves me and comes right to me but the kid that brought her here wants me to get rid of her. How do I teach my kids you can't get rid of an animal just because you want another one. Any thoughts? I should mention the main reason we let them have the cats is that we live near woods and had a lot of mice. Please no critics! I know I'm the adult and have the final say but curious has to other opinions?

Maybe the cat could become an outside cat.  I sound like it is somewhat antisocial. It would take care of the critters outside for you.

I thought of putting her out but she somehow got out two days ago and darn near broke the window trying to get back in, now her sister has crawled under my bed had 4 kitties and she stays in the room with her but not going near here.

Your cat has to get used to the people around her. I wouldn't get rid of her but just be patient and train her on what you want her to do. Cats are pretty smart and they listen. I have a cat myself and I was frustrated with him when I first got him but realized that their behavior  can be due to the new environment or stress..

You should go over facts about cats so they can understand her behavior more. Over time it will get better.

Thanks, I think I'm going to get some library books to teach them. She loves my curls up in my lap she just doesn't like the kids but they will not leave her alone either

You need to educate the cat.  Do research on how to teach her how to socialize with people.  Is your cat and adult or still a Kitten?  Cats and animals in general need to get accustom to their environment.  If the cat is a rescued might be that it was tormented where it was at before and needs to learn that is not going to be the same now.

My daughter adopted a kitten from PetSmart and it took her about a week to accustom herself to us and the dog, now she is a chill cat.

How long have you had her?  She might have been abused by a man and that’s why she’s afraid of your husband.  Maybe she was accidentally hurt by kids playing too rough with her and that’s why she afraid of your grandkids.  She might be an indoor cat and doesn’t want to go out.  I have many cats and I can leave the door open for a few minutes any of them can walk by, but they never leave the house.  I hope you don’t get rid of her, please don’t make her a throw a way pet.  Give her time and she just might surprise you.  Years ago I adopted a cat brought her home and honestly for 3 yes 3 months she lived under our bed.  I put a litter box in our bathroom and food and water.  She would come out when we weren’t there or asleep.  Eventually she came out and in time became  a very affectionate cat.  Good luck and keep us posted.

I'd like to know why you got the cat in the first place. Whose idea was it?

Make some rules for everyone and stick by them. I alternately love and hate the cat we have now, but I couldn't stand getting rid of her just because I don't like what she does sometimes. We all have personalities and some are not so pleasant. She sometimes has a hard time liking me.

Anyway, your cat could actually, and eventually, be a teaching experience for the whole family.

Yes, really.  :star:

My cat is a pain too. He does what he wants to do doesn't want me to hold him long. I actually get mad with my cat and won't interact for days except for litter box changing and food.

So I have taken time with her and showed little ones to be gentle and back up if she hisses she is doing a little better, but we have a ways to go.

A few months ago my cat bit me hard 3 times in 2 weeks.  I started to call her Trump.  Read online that when a cat does that it's not because she doesn't like you but wants attention. Trump doest bite me anymore. She runs when grandkids come and likes to be inside. I keep her in they're safer inside.

Cats are all different.  They can all be trained/retrained.

Sounds like your cat is experiencing some type of stress.  They do make products for stress.  Maybe you should look into these products if you want to keep her.  My cat is 12 years old and she only wants to be around me.  If someone comes to the house she hides under the bed or couch.  She is an indoor cat only.

So here we go had the door locked cat crawled under door knocked cage over, ate the new hampsters, I told kids she will get them one way or another but I have never had a cat break cages to get to animals I feed her dry food can food and milk and bowl are always full. I know I should not have let them get more but when you have an 11-year-old and a six-year-old aimed at your head begging and crying well guess I just spoil them.

Cats kill mice and birds.  To a cat a hamster is a mouse.  That’s a normal thing cats do.  You don’t have rodents as pets if you have a cat.  If you must have them, they must remain in a cage with a closed bedroom door.  If the kids want to take them out of cage and play with them, close the bedroom door so the cat can’t enter.  I rescue cats and if you lived closer I would take the cat.  If you are going to give it up make 100% sure it’s a no kill rescue.  I would hate to know that the cat was put down for doing what cats do.

If the cat is afraid to go outdoors it probably will never be an outdoor cat. She could just be nervous because kids seem to drive animals bonkers with how they handle and approach animals like cats. My cat didn't like my nephew and niece int he least. Found out why they were chasing her . Cats stress easy

Maybe you should invest in a kitty door so she can come in & out as she please & not have to bang into your windows to come in! Socialize her & create a routine especially with the kids like feeding time etc.

I have seen some cats that really prefer being indoors and being close to 1-2 person only. I think that's fine as long as the cat eats, naps, and is healthy.

Like others said give her time. My latest rescue cat has been in my house for 2 weeks and in the last few days has started to be “one of the gang”.  I rescued a cat a few years ago and she spent the first month hiding under a bed. Eventually she came out and became a love bug

Hi, I have a cat too. She loves me and I feed her all the time. She is indoor. She runs from my father but looks like she lays it as a game.My concern is if she goes outside she is vulnerable to cars and even coyotes. we have those in MA. I think she just needs to be taught. I would not get rid of her.

I have a cat and when I try to take him outside, he tries to get out my arms. He does go outside on my patio and lays down but I'm trying to get him to go on walks. Walking a cat sounds impossible but it's possible. I've seen people walking their cats on TV.

We have 2 strays that showed up..One about 7 years ago..He follows my husband around like a dog..Will sit on hubby but not me and terrified of everyone else..He will rub around my leg when I give him a snack..And our other stray showed up as a 6 week old kitten..She will let me for a minute..But both of them are inside/outside cats..Max the older one will run and hide if a female comes in the house or anywhere near him..Terrified of women..Smokey she is the hunter..Never know what she is bringing in the yard..And she still doesnt like to be held..Cats like dogs pick someone to be their master..Your cat has taken up with you..Cats have some weird ways...lol..But I would give her a chance..She feels comfortable with you..Good luck

Wow, that must be hard on you. I have seen ads recently on cat food targeted at indoor cats. But that's just from a nutritional aspect, not behavioral, as you noted below.

So both cats spend as much time outside as they do inside now and they are very lovable to everyone except each other
