Debate & Discuss / Re: minimum wage increase

so, if the minimum wage goes up, so will cost of living will increase.

 ???
The cost of living has already been increasing steadily for the past thirty or forty years. It's the minimum wage that has failed to keep up.

Minimum wage has kept up. If it was adjusted for inflation, it would only be $4-5 today.

How has it kept up? It has stayed about the same (in most of the US) since the 1970s. Why would adjusting it for inflation make it even less?

Your first statement is blatantly false. Minimum wage was only $1.60 in 1970. It's more than quadrupled since then. Second, when minimum wage was signed into law in 1938, it was $0.25/hr. Adjusted for inflation, that would be $4.20 in 2016.

While the federal minimum wage was only $3.35 per hour in 1981 and is currently $7.25 per hour in real dollars, when adjusted for inflation, the current federal minimum wage would need to be more than $8 per hour to equal its buying power of the early 1980s and more nearly $11 per hour to equal its buying power of the late 1960s.

Exactly. $3.35 in 1981 to $7.25 today. That's more than double, not about the same.

It does not have the same spending power.

But you said it was about the same.

Yes, same spending power, making it effectively the same.

The idea that someone promoting disgusting racist and near-fascist rhetoric should be allowed to speak because "free speech" is an attitude that has poisoned the US for quite some time.

You cannot debate a fascist. You cannot debate someone who refuses to acknowledge your humanity. You can only defend yourself.

Not sure if this will fix your problem but make sure to disable any adblock feature, if only temporarily, while going through your cash email.

While I would never vote for a Republican (not saying much since I really don't think voting does much at all anyways) Kasich does seem to be the only candidate that is not a complete doofus. He is respectable during debates and seems to be far more responsible.

At Trump's almost-rally in Chicago, the unrest is the result of good people taking to arms to defend themselves against a despicable man with despicable politics. The idea that he even tried to hold a rally in a city primarily African-American and Latino whilst preaching for the latter to be deported boggles my mind even now.

I think a great first step in this discussion is to stop referring to the mentally ill as "Crazies"! Just a suggestion.

Mturk is legitimate, do simple tasks and you can quickly transfer money to Amazon to buy things you need like a mattress. (Granted, it will take awhile to get the amount to buy that, but still!)

Other than that, maybe take up small odd-jobs in your area? Babysitting can pay a lot if you're good with kids.

What's the exchange rate now? I feel like it's ridiculous, but it makes me wish I invested in bitcoins when they first became a thing!

I think we need to understand that there are various factors in our life that prevent us from seeing hardships others go through. If being sensitive to this is "too PC", so be it.

Off-Topic / Anyone else with chronic fatigue?
« on: March 03, 2016, 11:12:58 am »Message ID: 1050752
Maybe not necessarily Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, but something that causes similar levels of fatigue?

I have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and to date I still have had little way to combat the near-constant drowsiness and desire to sleep. Just this morning I was so exhausted upon waking up despite having a full 8 hours that I could barely keep my eyes open and couldn't find it in me to drive to class, so I missed it today!

 Definitely far from the first time I've skipped class to get some extra shut eye, too.

I'm seeing my OBGYN Monday, hopefully we can figure something out!

Yea, I don't often have luck with peanuts survey myself. Sometimes it's even difficult to be credited for a disqualification, because most of their surveys are hosted elsewhere and they aren't "detected", I suppose.
