Off-Topic / Update on Indoor Herb Garden Results!
« on: July 16, 2020, 05:17:14 pm »Message ID: 1332509
As you may remember, I planted 7 kinds of herbs in peat pots and put them in my new Ikea Socker glass greenhouse and set it on a small table in my kitchen by the window. Just wanted to let you know that five days after I planted them (Saturday) 6 of the 7 have begun to sprout! Of course, the real test is the test of time. Hopefully these very, very tiny herb plants will grow into full-grown plants at some point. The only one not sprouting yet is the cilantro, but that can take 7 to 10 days to do anything. So this is telling me that even people with black thumbs (like ME, ME, ME!) can at least grow something, LOL!  :clover: :peace:

Off-Topic / I Finally Planted My Indoor Herb Garden!
« on: July 12, 2020, 01:25:16 pm »Message ID: 1332090
After talking about it for a couple of years, I finally planted my indoor herb garden. First I ordered a Socker glass greenhouse from Ikea, and it took 3 months to get it due to the pandemic. Once the greenhouse arrived, I went to home depot to get seedlings, peat pots, and starter soil. They had everything but the seedlings. So when I got home, I ordered them off of Amazon. They got here in a couple of days, and I planted the seeds and put them in the little greenhouse and set  it on our buffet table. Luckily, since I have a cat, the little glass greenhouse has two doors that close (leaving a way to get air) so that my cat doesn't get into it. Of course, each morning I've looked at the pots to see if anything has started growing. Nothing yet, but it's only been 3 days, LOL!  :peace:  :clover:

Off-Topic / St. Patrick's Day Meal
« on: March 03, 2020, 06:01:54 pm »Message ID: 1315477
i grew up very near Chicago back in the '60s and '70s when the original Mayor Daley was in office. Every year there was a huge St. Patrick's Day parade and just about everyone I knew had a special St. Patrick's day supper. We would ALWAYS have corned beef and cabbage, some kind of bread, and some kind of green dessert. I remember one year it was green Rice Crispy treats, homemade of course. Since I've lived in Georgia (41 years), I hear of very few families having a special St. Paddy's Day meal. I got my husband, who is a born and raised Georgian, into the habit of making my special supper and we haven't looked back!

Do you and your family do anything special for a St. Patrick's meal?  :peace:  :clover:

Off-Topic / Crocheters and Knitters Favorite Stitches
« on: February 12, 2020, 04:24:40 pm »Message ID: 1312859
I've been on a crocheting bug recently. I've made a couple of little blankets and pillow covers and stuff like that. It's hard for me to be excited about crochet unless I've got a fun and creative stitch to work with.  I'm also interested in taking up knitting again, which I haven't done in 40 years!

Does anyone here have a favorite crochet or knitting stitch that they'd like to share?   :peace:

Also, if you have someone you follow on YouTube that has a creative stitch channel, I'd love to hear about them as well!

Off-Topic / Post-Holiday Lift or Blues
« on: January 12, 2020, 03:49:51 pm »Message ID: 1308822
When I was younger, I used to have the holiday blues and a post-holiday lift because all of the holiday hullabaloo was over! I think it was partly because I was usually working during the holidays that caused this, partly because being with my extended family always reminded me that I wasn't married and I didn't have kids. I basically had to sit at the children's card table for every holiday meal until I was in my upper 20s, LOL!

Then after I got married and had kids, I started having the opposite: a lift during the holidays and the blues afterwards. I especially feel that now because my kids go back to school and my husband goes back to work after their holiday break, and I'm still working by home all by my lonesome, except for my excellent cat, Tinker!

How do you feel about the holiday season and post-holiday time? :peace:

Off-Topic / Who Here Has an Out-of-the-House job?
« on: January 05, 2020, 07:08:24 am »Message ID: 1307881
I guess I was in the full-time workforce for about 16 years before I had my first child. Then I decided to work from home in order to be home with him. My sons are now 22 and 20 years old and I'm still working from home. I've contemplated getting a part-time job suitable for a more mature person (58) outside of my home. Does anyone else have a job outside of their home?  :peace:

Off-Topic / White Elephant Gift Exchange
« on: December 27, 2019, 05:05:24 pm »Message ID: 1306627
So we played a game of White Elephant Gift Exchange this past Wednesday with my extended family. We brought our four gifts (one from me, my husband, and our two boys. I had never played this Christmas gift exchange game and didn't know quite what to expect. What a hoot it was! Usually we just have a secret Santa gift exchange, and it's kind of boring because we didn't really know what to get each other that costs less than 20 bucks. But the White Elephant game was so much better because there were a few nice gifts, a few so-so gifts, and then a few horrible gifts! We had a lot of fun!  :peace:

Off-Topic / Calling All Crocheters and Knitters!
« on: December 15, 2019, 07:12:34 pm »Message ID: 1305306
I purchased a beautiful new yarn bowl from a crafter on Etsy a few days ago, and I'm due to get it just before Christmas! I'm not sure how to insert a picture from my computer, but it's really gorgeous. I have gotten tired of having my desktop clogged up with yarn, hooks, scissors, and needles, so I've gotten this beautiful ceramic bowl with a groove for the yarn to be pulled through and plenty of room for needles, hooks, and yarn! Does anybody else have one of these yarn bowls? I'd never actually heard of such a thing until about a year ago.  :peace:

Off-Topic / Presents for Pets?
« on: November 11, 2019, 04:14:56 am »Message ID: 1300809
I have a cat named Tinker that I spend about $50 on for his birthday and also for Christmas. I go on Chewy.com and have a blast picking out toys for him. I've always gotten presents for my pets, but I'm really spoiling this cat, probably because I'm in my late 50s (grandmother age).

Does anyone else here spend a lot on their pets for birthdays and Christmas?  If so, what kind of stuff do you get them?

Off-Topic / Favorite Toy
« on: October 27, 2019, 08:39:32 am »Message ID: 1298599
Christmas is coming up in just a few short months. My kids are grown, so they usually get money from us so they can spend it on what they want. My husband and I usually purchase a large item together and call it our Christmas present to each other (this year it's a new king mattress). The one person that I still give actual surprise gifts to is our cat, Tinker. I'm looking at Chewy's selection of cat toys, but I haven't nailed down the toys I'm actually going to purchase.

If you have a cat(s), what's your cat's favorite toy(s)? I just need to get some ideas, so thank you! :cat: :peace:

Off-Topic / Wasabi Peas
« on: October 24, 2019, 09:44:23 am »Message ID: 1298273
I really, really, really like wasabi peas! However, I'm kind of picky about them. I used to love the wasabi peas in the tall can, but then they started tasting too sweet for me. I love the ones from our local international market, but it's kind of a hassle to get there, so we only go maybe once every two months. I do not like the Publix wasabi peas, just a taste I don't care for. We looked into making our own wasabi peas, but then found that just the ingredients were expensive, so gave that up pretty quickly. And then FINALLY, my husband found Hoosier Farm wasabi peas pm Amazon and ordered them. They are DELICIOUS! So our wasabi pea-finding mission is over, LOL!

How do you feel about wasabi peas?  :peace:

Off-Topic / Our Little Furry Friends
« on: September 17, 2019, 01:50:29 pm »Message ID: 1293270
My family is a cat family. We've only had cats through the years, probably because we're too lazy to take a dog on walks, give baths, etc. My most recent cat, named Tinker, is my furry little love! He's three years old and is orange and white.  He's very loving, but he's also kind of a stinker (will swipe at you as you go by kind of thing).

Do you have a pet?  If so, what kind?
