Off-Topic / Need help from Computer Gurus
« on: June 12, 2017, 07:03:16 pm »Message ID: 1148339
i have a Dell XP computer (2002 or so) that I use to connect to the internet and access PTC sites.  I have used Wireless Adapters (Cisco AE 2500) in the past to make the connection, but while that worked last year, it no longer works today.  My computer recognizes that I have a wireless adapter and says I am connected -- but when I try to access the internet, the computer can not connect (I have a  continuous circling (the drain) waiting for my sites to load.

Bought a new wireless adapter (Netgear) with the same result - the connection was recognized, but without the ability to access any sites on the internet.

Bought an ethernet cable and  plugged that in -- the local Area connection is recognized -- but I  still can not access any sites on the Internet.

Spent an hour talking to tech support at my ISP trying different things with no luck -  ran out of ideas.   We're both stumped.

So I'm appealing to the computer gurus here for help.   Any thoughts on why this is happening and what I can do to resolve it?

Support / Radio Loyalty -- Is there a way to change stations?
« on: July 05, 2015, 10:10:13 pm »Message ID: 994814
There use to be a link that allowed me to select several different stations.  Haven't seen it for some time -- and haven't use Radio Loyalty since the link was dropped.  Is there another way to get something other than Electric FM?

Support / Java notice on Radio Loyalty
« on: August 15, 2014, 05:57:42 pm »Message ID: 909358
I keep getting a notice to update my Java plugin on the Radio Loyalty window.

It concerns me because I just installed the latest Java update (Version 7 Update 67) on my machine and I'm not sure this Java plugin notice is legit or not.  It says it Version 7.23 update 25.

The Java update was for my machine, but I'm not sure whether the Java plugin is browser specific.  (I use Firefox for Radio Loyalty.)

Is this happening to anyone else?  Any clue as to whether it's legit or not?

I also suspect that every time the notice comes up, the RL counter is reset.  And it comes up a lot  -- very annoying -- have put RL aside until I  hear from  other RL users.

I figured out how to contact RL and have sent them an inquiry about this Java pop-up.

Off-Topic / Cataract surgery - successful?
« on: June 29, 2014, 10:05:53 pm »Message ID: 894536
Have you had cataract surgery?  Were you happy with the results?  Any problems or suggestions to someone who might need to have it done?

My eye doctor is suggesting I consider it and that I will be very pleased with the results -- in that I will have better distance vision -- probably won't need glasses for driving or TV but will need glasses for close work.  That troubles me since I spend most of my time on my computer and I'm concerned about what losing my nearsightedness will mean.

Support / to charmaine56 - re submitting POP's to FC - please respond
« on: May 09, 2014, 11:43:51 am »Message ID: 878842
Charmaine56 -- saw your reply on an earlier thread about having difficulty submitting your POP for the $1 bonus.

I'll be happy to walk you through the process.  Let me know which browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome or other) and operating system (XP, Windows 7, 8, 9 Vista) you have on your PC.

What method did you use to receive your cash out?  (Paypal, direct deposit to your bank, or check?  If a check, do you have the facility to either scan the check onto your computer or take a picture of it and bring that picture into your computer?

Please look for the PAINT software on your machine (Click START, Programs and Application to find -- if it's not on the left side of the START menu).

I'll check back on this thread for your response.

The method that FC uses to collect the Proof of Payment screenshots is easier than it was.  Considering the number of POP's they have to deal with, you should understand that any manual submissions would be a nightmare for them.  The process works, you just have to figure out how to make it work for you.  And I'll help if you respond.

Support / Error messages on Windows system management
« on: January 31, 2014, 01:40:26 pm »Message ID: 845481
While this is not specifically related to FC, the issue probably affects all of us to some extent.

I received a phone call today from "Windows Service" area and was told my computer was sending error messages to them and they were checking with me about what might be happening to my computer.  (Sounds good, but since Windows/Microsoft won't give me the time of day without a service contract, I was a little leary).

The fellow directed me to an area of my computer management system that show a long list of error messages.

When I viewed the text of the messages, they were generally ones where Windows was unable to identify the  registry of the web page that was trying to access my computer (I think) and they blocked access.  (This does not surprise me since Avast - my security software -- also blocks incoming sites that they view as being a security risk and they tell me frequently that they have done so.  One of the problems of viewing ads.)

I didn't pursue the discussion with the fellow on the phone because I figured it was just a scam -- a scare technique to drum up some business for whatever he/his organization was selling.  (some sort of security measure)

I did run Malwarebyte on both my computers and confirmed there were no viruses/malware on either computer.

Does anyone have any insight to add to this situation?

Have you received a similar phone call -- if so, what did you do?
