Off-Topic / The New and improved Whoop-de-doo!

At work we've got a station to print out 1000's of labels for a project we're doing. Each label has the name, room location, etc. for each item we're sending, and each site (or order) may contain hundreds (or even a few thousand) employees. So we devised a way to roll up all of the labels for one order instead of having them spill on the floor, or without wearing out the worker's wrist from spooling the labels by hand. It's basically a powered hand driver that has a used label roll as its "bit". Then they just have to start the labels on the cardboard roll, hit a button on the driver, and have the driver spool all of the labels in a few minutes!

Do you have any funny inventions or any that you've seen being used?

Off-Topic / Anyone heard about these new 3D teleconferencing Holograms?

I was just surfing around the web today and happened across this story about some new invention out of Berkley... Here's a YouTube vid that talks about it:

What do you think? Is this the new wave of the future, or just some interesting piece of technology that'll go the way of the Laser Disc? I think it might be neat to use, but with all of the necessary equipment, it would be cost-prohibitive for most companies, and so it really won't catch on much...

Off-Topic / 1000 Characters
« on: February 04, 2010, 07:53:32 am »Message ID: 136812
In some forums or comment areas, the site imposes limits for the number of characters that can be used. This would include not only the letters, but also any digits, spaces, and punctuation. And usually the normal limit is set to 1000 characters. This limit provides the poster with enough space to compose a short paragraph; to write the main idea of the poster without comment running on and on in a rambling manner. This is also very effective in allowing multiple visitors to each express their own opinion while maintaining the reader's attention span. However, David Thorne has added an interesting twist. Instead of thinking of the 1000 characters as a limit, he has made it into a goal. He basically made it into a game to create a coherent post that gets as close as possible to the 1000 character limit without going over (sort of like the Price is Right game show). Check out http://www.27bslash6.com/1000characters.html To start it off, this post itself has exactly 1000 characters in it!

Off-Topic / It's Groundhog Day!

I guess ol' Phil saw his shadow today. Thus it looks like it'll be cold for another 6 weeks.  :crybaby2: What do you think of his prediction?

Also, has anyone actually gone out to PA for the Groundhog Day celebration? What did you think of it?
