Off-Topic / Re: Washing machine

I'm a big fan of front loaders, even though I don't have one right now (my family has the last washer and dryer set I bought. Long story.). Super energy efficient and cleaned great. The real trick with them is you have to leave the door open when not in use otherwise they mildew. The good news is you just need to leave the door cracked. Save the core from a toilet paper roll and pop it into the door when you're done washing, and voila! I saved a chunk of money by buying mine from ebay through a company who buys what's left of last year's models. Huge discount, same great quality, and I still got the 1 year free warranty. Happy shopping!

Not recently. My schedule's kinda crazy right now, but I used to have a few sites I had fun on. I'm kind of a sucker for games like Diner Dash and Plants vs. Zombies. The only problem is I only have a laptop and no mouse, so if I got on a hot streak I'd play until my hand ached from trying to be all speedy on a touch pad, lol.

Off-Topic / Re: When do you stop and when do you keep going?

I see people on the side of the freeways and roadways all the time. I never stop. My parents stopped stopping to help people some 20 years ago after several reports of people trying to be Good Samaritans being mugged or killed by the people they were trying to help. Sadly, some devious people use the kindness of others to lure them in and rob them (or worse). You did the right thing, but maybe you could call the police department or highway patrol that was responsible for the area and see if you can find out more information. Sometimes they can give general info, and it might help ease your concern.

Yes I think that the People preparing for the world to end are wasting their time, I mean if the whole world is going to end, it's not like they are going to survive....lol

That's awesome. I was thinking the same thing. Scientists predict that the ultimately the world (Earth) will be destroyed when our sun explodes, creating a black hole or supernova or something (any astronomers out there wanna help me out?).

On the other hand, it's not necessarily a bad thing to be prepared for an emergency. I'm not exactly super-prepared, but I do little stuff like keep working flashlights in easy access.

Off-Topic / Re: what kind of pet do you have

Four cats and a horse. Of those, we adopted one cat and bought (kinda rescued) our horse. Of the other three cats, 2 are sisters who literally fell into our lives from the balcony of the mentally ill woman who used to live in the apartment above us (she's one neighbor I won't miss). The last cat we found in the alley behind our place when we moved. He was a very tiny, very underweight, extremely ill little boy who might not have survived the night if we hadn't happened to hear him crying. And no matter how many times I say I'm maxed out for animals I can care for right now, I still have people asking me to take in more cats. I wonder how my kitties will feel about a puppy when I have more money . . .  :dog: :cat:

I've never seen FC ask for a social. It could have been someone trying to scam you. If you have any more questions like this, though, you might want to post it in the Support forum. That forum is monitored by FC staff for questions from us.

My baby is painted black. But she looks more like mottled dirt brown and black with shiny finger and hand marks where people close the doors. You'd think with all the rain we've had she would look a little more black again.

Off-Topic / Re: What if you won the lottery...
« on: January 10, 2013, 10:17:56 pm »Message ID: 670161
If I won a big lottery, I'd disappear for at least a week and hire a financial advisor so I could get my head on straight. Then I'd pay off all my bills and set up trust funds for all my loved ones.

If any of you are lucky enough to win the lottery, just a head's up, if you want to give money to your loved ones, don't just give them money. Apparently there are huge gift taxes. There was an article that broke it down when there was that record-breaking Mega Millions lottery, and you can end up pretty broke pretty quick if you give monetary gifts to all of your loved ones. My realtor told me the way around that is to set up living trust funds for your loved ones. No gift taxes, and you get to help them out. Win, win.

Hey, we can always dream, right?  :)

Not yet. We passed around a rather lovely sinus infection at work last month, but I don't think the flu has really hit that hard yet on this part of the west coast. I heard the CDC was predicting a rather long and bad flu season this year. Hope you feel better soon.

Off-Topic / Re: Does anyone on here live in California...
« on: January 10, 2013, 10:03:56 pm »Message ID: 670152
I live in So Cal and have family up in No Cal too. Believe it or not, Tim, sometimes near Frisco it feels warmer in the winter than it does in the summer. Same amount of fog, but sometimes less wind in the winter.

If you're thinking about being near Frisco, I highly recommend Pier 39. Sea lions, candy, shops, and yummy food (Boudin's, Ghirardelli, Bubba Gump). You can also take a pretty cool bus tour from near the pier that takes you over the bridge and gives some pretty interesting history of the city, although I'm not sure how much it costs. There's also a rather famous ice cream shop in Oakland that you can Google, but I generally don't recommend going to Oakland unless you know exactly where you're going and stay in a group since crime can be kinda bad there. Lombard Street in Frisco is pretty cool too. It's the crookedest street in the world.

In So Cal, take your pick. From beaches to Disneyland to clubs in Hollywood to the world famous zoo and wildlife park in San Diego and Sea World, etc. It's less about "What is there to do?" and more "What are you interested in?" You can hike, you can ride horseback, you can hit a theme park, you can party, you can even hunt ghosts.

If you make it out here, hope you have an awesome time!  ;D

I don't have any VHS, but my mom still has some and a DVD/VCR combo. A few years ago my older sister came down to visit with my nephew. He was 4 or 5 at the time. My mom told him he could pick out any movie he wanted to watch. He picked out a tape and walked up to the player. Then he turned around and asked us how to make it work. When we looked he was holding the tape upside down and backwards. It was his first time ever using a VCR!  :o ;D

Off-Topic / Re: what is the best brand car out there that is afforable but suitable
« on: January 07, 2013, 11:22:52 am »Message ID: 668331
The exact brand that's best is a matter of personal preference, but I have found that Kia and Mitsubishi are a good bang for the buck. If you know anyone who is mechanically savvy and willing to let you drag them around, try checking tow yards. I'm not sure if this is true everywhere, but in California if your car is towed and not picked up within a certain number of days, the tow company automatically takes ownership of the vehicle. The tow yards turn around and sell the cars, some of them directly to the public. If you can evaluate a car for mechanical soundness fairly reliably, you can sometimes get a killer deal on a pretty good car.

You can get pregnant at pretty much any time in your cycle. Even though, in theory, your biological clock should keep you on a fairly regular cycle, it's not always perfect. That's how some people have fraternal twins. In a normal cycle only one egg is released at a time, but sometimes two are accidentally released and both get fertilized. Voila, fraternal twins. Cycle variations such as these can occasionally cause a woman to ovulate at different times in her cycle.

Off-Topic / Re: Are bananas healthy to eat?
« on: January 07, 2013, 10:52:18 am »Message ID: 668304
Bananas are great for you, especially if you have problems with muscle cramps. It's my go-to solution when I'm having leg cramps. I've only ever heard of 2 problems with bananas. One is digestive problems if you eat too many at once. The other is a problem my dad's friend had. He and my dad used to do a lot of organized distance bike rides, and he religiously ate a banana every day. For whatever reason one day before a big ride he decided to not eat a banana and had the worst leg cramps all day.

I tried one of those work-at-home deals one time making earrings. The technique was fairly easy, but they wanted every tiny seed bead to be exactly the same size which made it ridiculously time-consuming. I used to have a friend who made bead and crystal necklaces and bracelets, though. If you have an eye for it you can make some really beautiful pieces.
