Off-Topic / In case you were wondering what "satoshi" is . . .
« on: January 29, 2019, 09:12:27 am »Message ID: 1258917
The satoshi is currently the smallest unit of the bitcoin currency recorded on the block chain. It is a one hundred millionth of a single bitcoin (0.00000001 BTC). The unit has been named in collective homage to the original creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto.

info came from https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Satoshi_(unit)

Off-Topic / Libraries - oh, for the good old days
« on: January 07, 2019, 01:14:22 pm »Message ID: 1255665
Does anyone enjoy their library and the peace and quiet it affords? I have two libraries near me and no one at either place speaks sotto voce; you know, quietly. I've got a guy singing next to me on the computer as I type this.   :angry7:

Whatever happening to whispering in the library so you could have peace and quiet? Anyone else have this problem?

Off-Topic / The Great Rupert
« on: December 12, 2018, 02:35:07 pm »Message ID: 1251481
Has anyone ever seen this movie?

It's Christmas-themed :santa: and it stars Jimmy Durante (the schnoz) and a 'talented' squirrel.

"The Great Rupert is a 1950 comedy family film, produced by George Pal, directed by Irving Pichel and starring Jimmy Durante, Tom Drake and Terry Moore. It is based on a story, written by Ted Allan, which has also been published as a children's book under the title "Willie the Squowse"."

Kinda silly, but fun.

Off-Topic / Conclusion: Washing vegetables
« on: August 19, 2018, 09:06:19 am »Message ID: 1233418

I read this in an article about washing vegetables. This is the conclusion:

'Sorry, but your mom was right. While washing your produce won't protect you from every deadly food-borne illness, it has been shown to prevent some nasty things from getting inside your body. And since it doesn't take much effort to rinse off your veggies, there's really no good reason you shouldn't be doing it.

"It can only provide positive benefits," Patterson says. "You’re just building your safety net."'

If you want to read the whole article, this is the link:

Happy vegetable eating!

Off-Topic / chocolate babka
« on: August 15, 2018, 09:07:25 am »Message ID: 1232921
In case you were wondering when you did this as the captcha.

The chocolate babka is made from a doubled and twisted length of yeast dough and is typically baked in a high loaf pan. Instead of a fruit filling, the dough contains cinnamon and/or chocolate. The babka is usually topped with streusel. A similar cake called a kokosh is also popular in Jewish bakeries.

So now we know.  :rainbow: I hope you all are as pleased as I by this.  :in-love:

Off-Topic / Chocolate Babushka
« on: August 13, 2018, 08:42:01 am »Message ID: 1232583
In case anyone else was wondering what the heck a chocolate babushka is, since it's used as a password to sign in on FC sometimes. It's a 3D hollow chocolate doll with a smaller doll inside it. I believe it may have originated in Russia. Babushka means old woman or grandmother in Russian.

Just FYI. I thought if I was interested, someone else might be too.

Off-Topic / Oh, gnats!
« on: August 06, 2018, 03:42:50 pm »Message ID: 1231576
Just a note to remind you that you can get rid of gnats if they're starting to come around now. Put some cider vinegar in a small dish and cover tightly with plastic wrap.

Poke some holes in the wrap and the gnats climb in to get to the vinegar but they can't crawl back out. Works like a charm. They do drown, of course, so . . .

. . . please don't report me to the insect violence police! :silly:

Off-Topic / Gene Nelson - Wowie!

This is the guy who played the part of Will Parker in the movie Oklahoma. I'm SO impressed.

In my humble opinion, he rivals Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. But he and Donald O'Connor didn't get as many accolades for being great dancers as Fred A. and Gene K.  :confused1:

. . . when it should be called a flutterby? Because that's what they do; right?

I don't see many anymore. I think they are disappearing.  :(

Off-Topic / Squeaky shoe moment
« on: June 04, 2018, 08:38:22 am »Message ID: 1219892
Just wanted to impart what good thing happened when I finally decided to take care of a squeak in my shoes that was sort of drivin' me crazy. Didn't have far to drive, though.

Anyway, I saw online (youtube, of course) that if you put baby powder on the spot where you hear the squeak, it will cushion it enough to silence the squeak. It took me a few tries since I couldn't actually take the insole out of my shoe, but after about six tries, it worked.  :notworthy:

Woo hoo!

Off-Topic / Word game
« on: April 09, 2018, 08:41:35 am »Message ID: 1208795
So I looked up isomorphism in order to understand the comic page today. Here is the online definition:

"Isomorphism is a very general concept that appears in several areas of mathematics. The word derives from the Greek iso, meaning "equal," and morphosis, meaning "to form" or "to shape." Formally, an isomorphism is bijective morphism. Informally, an isomorphism is a map that preserves sets and relations among elements."

Whew! ??? I still don't get the joke unless he means he must be equal to God or something like that. Can anyone enlighten me? I don't think I can use this in a sentence intelligibly.

And I hate not getting a joke. Because if you have to look up stuff or ask, it loses its humor altogether. Right?
