I use gas central heating and electric portable heater when in a single room.

Ditto on this one. Gas central heating and portable heaters in bathroom and living room.

I'm watching Downton Abbey and am awaiting Doc Martin on PBS as well. I really can't stand primetime t.v. anymore.  :o

I do like the old fogey channels that show all the old shows I used to love. They're more my speed.   :D

I have always been a great speller and I spot misspellings all the time on posters and things. I just find it funny that people make mistakes on posters or signs that so many people will see. And sometimes it makes a funny statement at the same time.

We all have our strengths and weaknesses. I am stupid enough to correct people's grammar - almost can't help myself.  :-[

Off-Topic / Re: What major are/were you in college and why?

I started out being a Spanish major because a significant other suggested it, and I liked Spanish anyway.  :-\

I ended up being a Liberal Studies major and receiving my bachelor's in that. Do you want fries with that?  ::) They don't even have that particular major anymore at the university I attended.

I wish I had just taken English as my major. It's really my strength.

I'm not sure if I should feel 'nasty' or 'super-clean' reading how everyone changes theirs about once-a-week. I ... well, I don't think I use bed-sheets, using a blanket or two instead (which I roll up like sleeping-bags and stuff into plastic bags in the morning).

I guess 'having died' gives you a different perspective on 'lots of things' (including "what's dirty").

OK. 'Splain what you mean by 'having died". For real? :o

Can't afford a smartphone.  :-[

I'd like to have one, though.

Dunno if I'd be savvy enough to use it. I'd just like to have one to take great pictures all the time.

Debate & Discuss / Re: winter weather

Unbelievable weather here in the Midwest. Snow, snow and more snow and dangerous wind chill factors.  :o

I've had to dig my way out of snow drifts several times and there's more snow on the way.

Must be global warming, huh?  ???

Illinois' state flower is the violet. I had to look mine up too because I forget.

It doesn't come up too much in normal conversation, you know.

Almost never overeat, even on the holidays. It makes me feel horrible and I can't stand gaining weight as a result.  ::)

There's nothing good about that.

It does require some forethought and self-discipline to keep your mind on not overeating, especially when you're with other people who are self-indulging, but it's worth the effort.  :angel11:

It's called mindless eating when you don't think about what or how much you're eating.  :-[

Think about it.  ;)

Off-Topic / Re: How well do you remember the past?
« on: January 05, 2014, 11:29:15 am »Message ID: 836580
I remember very little of my past, with the exception of some VERY bad memories or VERY good memories. It's how I've always been. I think a person really has to make a point of remembering things or they will disappear.

I always thought that taking pictures was a good way to remember things, and now I hear that that's called something like picture dependency that hinders your own memory from remembering. Whatever!

I can go and see a movie and won't remember 9/10ths of it when I walk out of the theatre. That drives my kids crazy. They can't understand that that's just how I am. I wish I could change it, but I don't know how.  :notworthy:

Off-Topic / Re: Drunk Driving
« on: January 05, 2014, 11:13:16 am »Message ID: 836575
Drunk driving is BAD, BAD, BAD!!!!  :'(  The penalties should be just, but harsh. First time offenders should have their license taken away and a huge fine. After that, jail time seems fair enough. It would be nice if some counseling were added to the jail time as well.

I'm not sure what the answer could be for this one. It's so complicated.

It's a tough battle since people lose their judgment when they're drinking and think they're capable of driving. They don't even realize that they're endangering other people's lives.

I wish people would understand that, "First you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you." *

Once you've gotten to that point, how do you know you're having fun?  ???

Off-Topic / Re: Christmas tree
« on: December 28, 2013, 07:25:38 pm »Message ID: 832762
I love using real trees when they actually do smell like pine. Lots of them don't, and it they do not smell like pine, they do not deserve to be in my house and get all dry and drop their needles all over the place.

If I lived somewhere where they actually smelled like pine (Like Old Buddy in Oregon), I would much rather have a real tree.  ;)

FYI: If you do use a real pine tree, don't ever put it in your fireplace to burn it. They burn faster than anything you've ever seen and are slightly uncontrollable.  Been there. Done that. Won't ever do it again.  ::)

For a person who absolutely cannot get enough of talking, I can't say that I feel that way. I talk to everyone I meet, including on the elevator, meeting on the street, in a store or at the doctor's office or whatever. It's a really good feeling if I can make someone I don't know laugh or engage them in conversation.

There are so many interesting people out there. And anyone can teach you something you didn't know before.  It's amazing!  :)

Off-Topic / Re: sore throat remedy's
« on: December 28, 2013, 06:26:37 pm »Message ID: 832741
Vitamin C mega dose. I take honey and lemon for my throat. It can be in tea or all by itself warmed up.

Gargling with warm salt water is soothing and good for a sore throat. So is ginger.

Take some type of pain reliever and a cough drop before going to bed. Sleep slightly inclined if you're having trouble breathing.

Plenty of rest and fluids. Keep your humidifier going.  Don't stress. Neti pots are good for stuffy noses and sore throats. Try to keep breathing through your nose, is possible. Your nose is a natural filter.

Drink lots of water and give it about a week. You don't really need over the counter drugs for colds and sore throats.

P.S. Don't yell at anyone while your throat is sore. Makes it worse! That goes for sports, etc.

Thanks for this post. We all need to be reminded of good home remedies this time of year.
