Yes, Amazon is killing online & many other business!

But, Sales for in the stores are killing business - like Toy R US, Linen N Things, Mervyn's, Kmart, Sears & etc.

I like to shop in the stores than shop online! In stores get revenue of sales & the city!

Off-Topic / Giant, Chewy, Brown Butter Toffee Chocolate Chip Cookies
« on: February 28, 2019, 06:54:39 pm »Message ID: 1263884
A couple of nights ago I had the strongest craving for chocolate chip cookies.  But not just ANY chocolate chip cookie.  What I wanted was a Giant, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie because, well, they are the bestest!  There is something about chocolate chip cookies that is just so comforting and amazing and makes me oh-so happy.  Had a bad day?  Eat a cookie.  Celebrating something?  Time to eat a cookie.  The boys went to bed on time?  Bake some cookies.  And then eat one.

As I was pulling out the ingredients it occurred to me that I should try my recipe with brown butter.  I’ve long been a HUGE fan of brown butter cookies and for some reason, had yet to try it with my very favorite cookie recipe.  I got the butter browning and pulled out my tub of “baking stuff” where I happened across about 3,067 half-used bags of chocolate chips, toffee bits, caramel bits, etc.

I called over to Chris who was sitting on the couch to find out what sounded good for the cookies.  Now Chris is ALWAYS up for cookies and he is usually a strict “only chocolate chips” guy but we compromised and went with Heath toffee bits and a combination of milk chocolate and semi-sweet chips.

Now this particular recipe requires an hour of chilling (pure torture!) so we sat down to watch Under the Dome.  The house was already smelling amazing from the brown butter and after about 45 minutes I decided it was close enough and pulled the dough out a few minutes early because I. Just. Could. Not. Wait. Another. Second. Fifteen minutes later I was pouring myself a glass of milk and enjoying perhaps the greatest cookie I have ever had in my life.  Ever.

Soft and chewy and incredibly tender on the inside.  Slightly crunchy on the outside and did I mention giant??  Yes.  Like big enough that you really only want to eat one and then you feel so good about yourself because you only ate one that it’s pretty easy to convince yourself that you need to make these more often because you have developed amazing self control and will only eat one cookie.

Or is that just me??

Anyways. you want these.  Trust me.  Reece and Bryce assured me that these were AMAZING.  I asked Reece “Are they good?”  His response? “Mommy.  These are not good…they’re amazing!”  Love that little guy!

Makes 1 dozen.
Ingredients
2 c flour
½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
½ tsp corn starch
1 Tbls vanilla
¾ c unsalted butter
1 c brown sugar
½ c white sugar
1 egg, plus 1 egg yolk, room temperature
1 c semi-sweet chocolate chips or milk chocolate chips or a combination of chips
1 cup Heath toffee bits

Instructions
1. Combine the dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, salt, corn starch) and sift together.
2. Melt the butter in a small skillet over medium heat. The butter will start to foam and then start browning. You will be
able to smell a nutty aroma when it's ready. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Do not burn!
3. Cream butter with sugars together in a large mixing bowl.
4. Beat in the vanilla and then add in the egg and egg yolk and continue beating until the mixture is light and creamy.
5. Add in the dry ingredients and mix just until combined.
6. Stir in the chocolate chips and toffee bits.
7.  Put the dough in the refrigerator for an hour to chill.
8. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
9. Drop cookie dough ¼ cup at a time onto a parchment lined baking sheet.
10. Space cookies about 3 inches apart and bake for 15 to 17 minutes.
11. The cookies are done when the edges are golden. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes and
then transfer to a wire racks to finish cooling.
12. Enjoy!

Off-Topic / Best Ever Texas Sheet Cake!
« on: February 25, 2019, 05:38:11 pm »Message ID: 1263374
Texas Sheet Cake
Dilemma. You have a crowd coming over and you want to make a cake. Chocolate cake. But you don’t want to have to break out your cake pans, make layers, smooth on frosting, etc. You want something quick. But from scratch. What do you do?

Make a Texas Sheet Cake. Duh. This cake is the reason jelly roll pans exist. Honest. I can’t think of a single better way to use mine. When I make a cake it’s usually a big ordeal. Trying to pour the same amount of batter into each cake pan is a struggle. Then you have to get them out of the pan in one piece, then you have to frost and decorate and then cross your fingers that when you go to slice it, the slices come out pretty.

What a headache! (I’m lazy if you can’t tell…)

If all of that made you cringe, this is the cake for you. Maybe you need to serve more than a dozen people and you don’t want to have to sit there and cut slices of cake, this is the cake for you. Furthermore, if you like chocolate, chocolate, and a little more chocolate, this is the cake for you.

Do Texas Sheet Cakes Have Nuts?
First of all, for those of who us who grew up on sheet cakes like this, there comes a time when the “great nut debate” takes place. Some like it with, some like it without. Often times, the nuts are stirred into the frosting and so the entire cake is coated with nutty frosting. A good thing if you like nuts. Something terrible if you don’t.

Because there is always some debate, after frosting the cake, I sprinkle nuts on half (quickly because this frosting sets up FAST) and leave the other half plain. That way, people can serve themselves from one side or the other and peace has been restored once again.

Speaking of serving, let the people do it themselves! Who are we to say how big a piece of cake each person gets? No! Not good, not good at all. I say let your guests serve themselves…it’s for their own good and your sanity. Trust me.

Buttermilk vs. Sour Cream

I make my Texas Sheet Cake with sour cream. Always have. I see a lot of recipes that call for buttermilk and to be honest, this is because they are serving the same purpose in this recipe. They both add a lot of moisture and a bit of tanginess that compliments the chocolate overload that is taking place. I think the sour cream provides an even better texture so that’s why I include it in my recipe here.

What’s In A Texas Sheet Cake
This cake recipe is so awesome because it calls for pantry staples meaning you can whip up one of these babies any.time.you.want.

butter
cocoa powder
all-purpose flour
granulated sugar
salt
baking soda
sour cream
eggs
whole milk
powdered sugar
vanilla extract
pecans – optional

Texas Sheet Cake Frosting: A Chocolate Love Affair
Can we take a moment of silence to admire that frosting? I just want to lick it. Don’t judge. It’s crazy good and my most favorite chocolate frosting on the planet.

The chocolate frosting is actually more of a glaze and it gets poured – yes, I said poured – over the cake while still warm. This means it kind of soaks into the top layer of the cake creating irresisitble layers of chocolate goodness.

If you haven’t tried a Texas Sheet Cake before, let this be your first. Used to enjoy them on the regular but seem to have forgotten all about them? Hopefully this was a reminder to quickly put this cake back into your repertoire because trust me, once you have it again, you’ll be hooked

If you’re like me and enjoy a good Texas Sheet Cake now and again, welcome home.

Ingredients

Cake
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup water
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup sour cream
2 eggs room temperature

Chocolate Frosting
1/4 cup + 2 tbsp whole milk
1/2 cup unsalted butter
3 3/4 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup chopped pecans optional

Instructions

Cake
Preheat oven to 350F.
Grease and flour a 10 x 15 jellyroll pan. (Use cocoa powder to "flour" the pan if you like.)
Bring butter, water, and cocoa powder to a boil in a medium saucepan, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes.
Whisk together the flour, sugar, salt and baking soda in a large bowl. Set aside.
Whisk together sour cream and eggs.
Combine the sour cream and egg mixture with the flour and sugar mixture.
Gradually stir in the warm cocoa mixture and mix well. (You might need to whisk together.)
Pour the batter into the prepared jellyroll pan.
Bake for 22-25 minutes. The center of the cake should spring back when touched.

Chocolate Frosting
Bring the milk and butter to a boil. Remove from heat.
Whisk in the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, salt and vanilla extract.
Pour the frosting over the cake while the cake is still warm.
Quickly sprinkle on nuts if desired.
Leftovers should be stored in airtight container.

Off-Topic / EASY LAZY DAY LASAGNA
« on: February 19, 2019, 05:49:17 pm »Message ID: 1262439
Lasagna is the perfect easy recipe for busy weeknights! My delicious lasagna recipe features layers of lasagna noodles, meat sauce, and cheese resulting in a comfort dish that the whole family will love. I use a few tricks and a super simple recipe that yields sensational results. Lasagna doesn’t have to be reserved for weekends any longer! Complete your meal with our favorite dinner rolls and amazing broccoli salad.

Easy Meat Lasagna Recipe
There are many MANY nights that I am craving the cheesy goodness of lasagna. I mean, what’s not to love? All those layers of perfectly savory meat, cheese, and noodles….um, YUM.

I make this recipe A LOT. It’s just so quick to pull together and is perfect for busy weeknights. I use a trick my mom taught me, back when no boil noodles were not readily available, to cut down on time.

What Is the Best Cheese To Use For Lasagna
I always, always, always use mozzarella cheese. It melts so beautifully and is the perfect compliment to the other ingredients in this easy lasagna recipe. In addition to the mozzarella cheese, I use either ricotta or cottage cheese. For today’s recipe, I’ve made a few changes from my childhood including swapping out the cottage cheese for ricotta but honestly, both are so good.

What Ingredients Go Into Lasagna
Lasagna Noodles
Mozzarella Cheese
Ricotta or Cottage Cheese
Ground Beef or Pork
Pasta Sauce
Italian Seasoning

If you find yourself with a little extra time, go ahead and throw in some chopped onion and continue cooking until translucent after the meat has finished browning for some additional flavor and texture. One last thing, I used lean ground beef in this recipe but half beef and half pork make for a tasty combination.

You can also make your own pasta sauce. I do this just when I have extra time but homemade pasta sauce is definitely something special and a great way to add more flavor.

How Do You Make Homemade Lasagna
Lasagna is so easy to make at home and it’s just creating layers of different ingredients including long pasta sheets, a meat sauce and cheese. There is no end to the variations of homemade lasagna and the one I’m sharing with you today is very basic and a great place to start when making your own.

Please feel free to make any adjustments you like to suit your family’s preferences:

Ground turkey, beef or pork can be used in this recipe, or a combination if you like.
Try different types of cheeses.
If you are buying your marinara sauce, pay attention to the label. There are a lot of great sauce flavors out there that will really add depth to this dish.

It’s super important to let the lasagna rest after it’s finished cooking. I say a minimum of 15 minutes in my instructions below but the longer you have the better, up to 30 minutes to allow for cleaner slices. You can garnish with fresh basil or parsley if you’d like for a pretty pop of color.

Serve with some hot, fresh dinner rolls and some of my Nana’s green beans on the side and you’re all set! I hope you love this easy dinner as much as we do!

Off-Topic / Amazon places big bet in Tesla rival and electric truck startup Rivian!
« on: February 16, 2019, 11:32:57 am »Message ID: 1261866
Amazon places big bet in Tesla rival and electric truck startup Rivian:

* Amazon led a $700 million investment in Rivian, an electric pickup truck startup
* The tech giant could use Rivian's tech to speed up and cut the cost of deliveries
* Rivian debuted its R1T pickup and R1S SUV for the first time in LA last November
*The startup has been pegged as a rising competitor for Tesla's electric pickup

Amazon said on Friday it would lead a $700 million investment in U.S. electric pickup truck startup Rivian, in the e-commerce giant's biggest bet on technologies with potential to reshape the automotive sector.

The deal represents a major endorsement of Rivian's electric vehicle technology by the world's largest online retailer, which is looking for ways to boost the speed and reduce the cost of its deliveries.

Reuters reported on Tuesday that Amazon and General Motors were in talks to invest in Rivian.

GM's talks with Rivian about an investment are continuing and any deal would be announced at a later date, people familiar with the talks said on Friday.

Rivian could ultimately be valued at between $3 billion and $4 billion, one of the sources said.

The Rivian deal comes as its much larger electric car manufacturing rival, Tesla, struggles to stabilize production and deliver consistent profits as it ramps up its mass market Model 3 sedan.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk told investors in August that an electric pickup is 'probably my personal favorite for the next product' from the company.

But he has spoken only in general about a potential launch, saying that it would happen 'right after' Tesla's Model Y, which the company has targeted to start production in 2020.

Rivian unveiled its electric R1T pickup and R1S SUV for the first time at the Los Angeles Auto Show last November.

But the company had piqued Amazon's interest earlier, according to one of the sources.

Amazon Ceo Jeff Bezos personally reached out to Rivian founder and Ceo R.J. Scaringe last summer to express interest in an investment, the source said.

Since then Amazon has stepped up its investment in the car sector, participating in a $530 million funding round announced last week in self-driving car startup Aurora Innovation.

Amazon is looking for deals that can speed packages to shoppers' doorsteps regardless of spikes in consumer demand or shortages of delivery personnel.

Last year, Mercedes said Amazon had become the biggest customer of its Sprinter vans, securing 20,000 vehicles for delivery contractors.

Amazon has sought to win customers inside the car as well.

Working with BMW, Ford and Toyota, Amazon has enabled its Alexa virtual assistant to be installed in new models so drivers can dictate what music they want to hear and what tasks they want it to perform, hands-free.

Rivian aspires to be the first to produce a mass market electric pickup. It intends to begin selling its R1T by the end of 2020.

Scaringe has described the Rivian vehicle's platform as a skateboard that packages the drive units, battery pack, suspension system, brakes and cooling system all below wheel height to allow for more storage space and greater stability due to a lower center of gravity.

He has also said the company plans to partner with outside firms to develop advanced self-driving technology, rather than try to do so on its own.

Rivian's existing financial backers include Saudi auto distributor Abdul Latif Jameel Co, Sumitomo Corp of Americas and Standard Chartered Bank.

What is the Telsa Semi Truck?
This is not the first expansion of the Tesla range beyond cars, with an electric semi truck planned for production in 2019.

Tesla began accepting preorders for its electric truck in November and revealed it will cost buyers at least $150,000 (£120,000).

For those who want their truck in a hurry, a special 'founders series' is being made, with $200,000 (£150,000) required up front to get one of the first 1,000 made.

Without a trailer, the Tesla Semi achieves 0 to 60 mph in five seconds, compared to 15 seconds in a comparable diesel truck.

It does 0 to 60 mph in 20 seconds with a full 80,000-pound load.

Off-Topic / Payless ShoeSource to shutter all of its remaining 2,100 US stores
« on: February 16, 2019, 11:13:09 am »Message ID: 1261862
Payless ShoeSource to shutter all of its remaining 2,100 US stores but plans to still keep its 1,400 in Latin America open:

* The Topeka, Kansas-based chain said Friday it will hold liquidation sales starting Sunday and wind down its e-commerce operations
* All of the stores will remain open until at least the end of March and the majority will remain open until May
* The company said in an email that the liquidation doesn't affect its franchise operations or its Latin American stores, which remain open for business as usual
* It lists 18,000 employees worldwide

Payless ShoeSource is shuttering all of its 2,100 remaining stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, joining a list of iconic names like Toys R Us and Bon-Ton that have closed down in the last year.

The Topeka, Kansas-based chain said Friday it will hold liquidation sales starting Sunday and wind down its e-commerce operations. All of the stores will remain open until at least the end of March and the majority will remain open until May.

The debt-burdened chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April 2017, closing hundreds of stores as part of its reorganization.

At the time, it had over 4,400 stores in more than 30 countries. It remerged from restructuring four months later with about 3,500 stores and eliminated more than $435 million in debt.

The company said in an email that the liquidation doesn't affect its franchise operations or its Latin American stores, which remain open for business as usual. It lists 18,000 employees worldwide.

Shoppers are increasingly shifting their buying online or heading to discount stores like T.J. Maxx to grab deals on name-brand shoes. That shift has hurt traditional retailers, even low-price outlets like Payless. Heavy debt loads have also handcuffed retailers, leaving them less flexible to invest in their businesses.

But bankruptcies and store closures will continue through 2019 so there's 'no light at the end of the tunnel,' according to a report by Coresight Research.

Before this announcement, there have been 2,187 U.S. store closing announcements this year, with Gymboree and Ascena Retail, the parent of Lane Bryant and other brands, accounting for more than half the total, according to the research firm. This year's total is up 23 percent from the 1,776 announcements a year ago. Year-to-date, retailers have announced 1,411 store openings, offsetting 65 percent of store closures, it said.

Payless was founded in 1956 by two cousins, Louis and Shaol Lee Pozez, to offer self-service stores selling affordable footwear.

Off-Topic / Style icon Lee Radziwill, Jackie Kennedy Onassis' younger sister, dies
« on: February 16, 2019, 11:00:54 am »Message ID: 1261861
Style icon Lee Radziwill, Jackie Kennedy Onassis' younger sister, dies at home in New York aged 85:

* Radziwill died at home in New York on Friday, her cause of death is unclear
* She had allegedly been suffering from an 'age-related disease' says a source
* The prominent socialite shared a life-long rivalry with Jackie over men and fame
* During the 1960s, they were considered to be the world's most famous sisters
* Radziwill worked as an actress, interior designer and as a PR exec for Armani

Jackie Kennedy's younger sister Lee Radziwill has died age 85 at her home in New York City.

Along with Jackie, the slender brunette style-icon was considered to be one half of the world's most famous sisters during the 1960s.

She had previously been said to be battling an undisclosed age-related disease, but a source told WWD that over the past week she had been in 'good health', present, and as 'elegant' as ever.

Her cause of death is yet to be confirmed.

Born Caroline Lee Bouvier in New York in 1933 to New York Stockbroker and socialite John Vernou Bouvier III, Radziwill came from a famous family but established herself as a noteworthy figure in her own right.

She boasted an exclusive list of close friends, from Andy Warhol to Truman Capote, and worked briefly as an actress before turning her hand to interior design and public relations.

For a time, the social doyenne was also an American Princess. After her first marriage to Michael Canfield collapsed, she married Prince Stanisław Albrecht Radziwill, a Polish aristocrat, in 1959.

Earning her the name 'Her Serene Royal Highness', the pair had two children together, before they divorced in 1974.

She married a third time to film director Herbert Ross in 1988. Their union lasted 13 years and they split in 2001, just months before his death.

But there was one everlasting relationship that stood above the rest for Radziwill - her bond with her sister, Jackie.

Jackie and Lee, were two of the most glamorous women of their generation, but their closeness came with a fierce rivalry.

Described by Capote as ‘American geishas’ who existed only to captivate the world’s richest and most powerful men, the duo were said to be embroiled in a life-long battle to one-up each other.

From a young age the pair pitted themselves against one another, with Lee regarded as the 'pretty one', and Jackie the 'smart one'.

'The competition went on throughout their lives: ‘Who’s going to be more popular? Who will marry first?'' said Randy Taraborrelli, the author of 'Jackie, Janet and Lee', to People.

In her book 'Happy Times', Lee remarked: 'One always looks up to older siblings for guidance. One tries to emulate them and follow their achievements. That’s what I did with my sister.'

But the contention came to a shattering crescendo when Jackie became First Lady in 1961.

'How can I compete with that?' Radziwill reportedly said during a function at Buckingham Palace. 'It's all over for me now.'

In the years that followed the pair are said to have shared a turbulent relationship, with several highs and many well documented lows.

Radziwill was a frequent visitor to the White House during her brother-in-law's short-lived presidency.

Canfield, her first husband, would later claim Lee had boasted to him of having sex with John F Kennedy.

Lee was staying with the Kennedys after Jackie had given birth to daughter, Caroline. She reportedly left her bedroom door open deliberately so Canfield could hear her and JFK making love.

The claims, however, have never been proven.

After JFK's assassination, Radziwill left a note on Jackie's pillow that read: 'Good night my darling Jacks — the bravest and noblest of all. L.'

As Jackie lay dying of cancer in 1994, Radziwill clambered to be at her sister's side and told her 'I love you so much. I always have, Jacks. I hope you know it.'

But in one final tension-fueled twist in their relationship, Jackie omitted her sister entirely from the will of her $150 million estate, citing years of hand-outs as the reason.

Her children were given half-a-million dollars each.

'She was the height of elegance, a true icon — an incredibly attractive woman who always adapted to whatever the circumstance. She was never overdressed or underdressed,' said Mathilde Favier, of Christian Dior.

'She was incredibly elegant and inspiring, and always ahead of her time because she was a fashion visionary. It’s very sad. It’s the end of an era.'

Before her retirement, Radziwill served for many years as a Public Relations executive for Giorgio Armani.

She was a stalwart attendee of New York Fashion Week, and regularly attended other fashion events around the world right up until her death.

'Regrets? I think everyone has regrets, and people who say they haven’t are either liars . . . or narcissists' Radziwill said to the New York Times in 2013.

'There have been many things in my life to have regrets about, in the sense I wish I could have changed them, or somehow made them not happen,' she continued.

The 85-year-old died on Friday. She is survived by her daughter Anna Christina Radziwill.

Her son Anthony died of cancer in 1999, just one month after her nephew, John Kennedy Jr, died in a plane crash.

'When I was young, I used to think that everyone should die at 70...but my closest friends like Rudolf and Andy [Warhol] and to an extent Capote, let alone my close family...didn't even reach that age,' Radziwill said in the same New York Times interview.

'There is something to be said for being older, and memories.'

Toys R Us could be making a comeback as former executive plans a new venture by the holiday season
*Toys R Us is planning to re-emerge by the 2019 holiday season
* A former Toys R Us executive is now CEO of a company called Tru Kids Brand
*He and his team are exploring options of freestanding stores and e-commerce
*Toys R Us filed for bankruptcy in 2017 and liquidated its businesses last year

Toys R Us fans in the US should see the iconic brand re-emerge in some form by this holiday season.

Richard Barry, a former Toys R Us executive and now CEO of the new company called Tru Kids Brands, told The Associated Press he and his team are still working on the details, but they're exploring various options including freestanding stores and shops within existing stores.

He says that e-commerce will play a key role.

Toys R Us, buckling under competition from Amazon and several billions of dollars of debt, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in September 2017 and then liquidated its businesses last year in the U.S. as well as several other regions including the United Kingdom.

In October, a group of investors won an auction for Toys R Us assets, believing they would do better by potentially reviving the toy chain, rather than selling it off for parts.

Starting January 20, Barry and several other former Toys R Us executives founded Tru Kids and are now managing the Toys R Us, Babies R Us and Geoffrey brands.

Toys R Us generated $3 billion in global retail sales in 2018.

Tru Kids estimates that 40 percent to 50 percent of Toys R Us market share is still up for grabs despite many retailers like Walmart and Target expanding their toy aisles.

'These brands are beloved by customers,' said Barry.

He noted that the company will focus on experiences in the physical stores, which could be about 10,000 square feet.

The original Toys R Us stores were roughly about 40,000 square feet.

Barry said he and his team have been reaching out to toy makers and have received strong support.

But he acknowledged that many had been burned by the Toys R Us liquidation.

Tru Kids, based in Parsippany, New Jersey, about a 20 minute drive from Wayne, New Jersey, where Toys R Us was based, will work with licensing partners to open 70 stores this year in Asia, India and Europe. Outside the U.S., Toys R Us continues to operate about 800 stores.   :in-love:

Sears STAYS in business as federal judge approves last-minute $5.2 billion bankruptcy sale to ex-CEO Eddie Lampert
A bankruptcy judge blessed a $5.2 billion plan by Sears chairman and biggest shareholder to keep the iconic business going

The approval means roughly 425 stores and 45,000 jobs will be preserved
Judge Robert Drain rejected the committee's claims that the sale process was unfair and flawed
Eddie Lampert's bid through an affiliate of ESL hedge fund overcame opposition from a group of unsecured creditors
Lawyers for Sears and ESL argued that the sale offered the best deal and also preserved jobs

A bankruptcy judge has blessed a $5.2 billion plan by Sears chairman and biggest shareholder to keep the iconic business going.

The approval means roughly 425 stores and 45,000 jobs will be preserved.

Eddie Lampert's bid through an affiliate of his ESL hedge fund overcame opposition from a group of unsecured creditors, including mall owners and suppliers, that tried to block the sale and pushed hard for liquidation.

In delivering his decision Thursday, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain for the Southern District of New York rejected the committee's claims that the sale process was unfair and flawed, that it shut out any other parties who could have been interested in buying the business and that Sears had more value to its creditors if it died than if it lived.

Lawyers for Sears and ESL argued that the sale offered the best deal and also preserved jobs.

Drain is expected to enter his order on Friday, making it official.

Even with this latest reprieve, Sears' long-term survival remains an open question. Lampert hasn't put forth any specific reinvention plans and the company still faces cutthroat competition from Amazon, Target and Walmart. Meanwhile, its stores look old and drab.

Lampert steered Sears into Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October. The company's corporate parent, which also owns Kmart, had 687 stores and 68,000 employees at the time of the filing. At its peak in 2012, its stores numbered 4,000.

Sears was hard hit during the recession and outmatched in its aftermath by shifting consumer trends and strong rivals. It hasn't had a profitable year since 2010 and has suffered 11 straight years of declining sales.

Lampert's original plan had been rejected by a subcommittee of the Sears board. ESL sweetened the bid several times before the subcommittee gave it the OK.

A group of unsecured creditors, who rank at the bottom of the list to be paid, filed objections to the sale, alleging falsified financial projections, excessive buybacks, and a spinoff of key brands that stripped the business of key assets.

'The tortured story of Sears reads like a Shakespearean tragedy,' the group said. 'Lampert and ESL managed Sears as if it were a private portfolio company that existed solely to provide the greatest returns on their investment, recklessly disregarding the damage to Sears, its employees and its creditors.'

Lampert personally owns 31 percent of the Sears' outstanding stock, and his hedge fund has an 18.5 percent stake, according to FactSet. He stepped down as CEO in October after serving in that role since 2013.

Under Lampert's watch, Sears has survived in part by spinning off stores and selling well-known brands like Craftsman tools. He has also lent some of his own money.

Lampert has been criticized for not investing in his stores. Even Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat and potential presidential candidate, has attacked him and questioned his commitment to Sears workers.

'I am concerned that under your leadership, Sears may continue to struggle and employees will continue to face uncertainty and anxiety over their future employment, and ongoing risks to their benefits and economic security,' Warren wrote in a letter to Lampert made available to The Associated Press by a worker advocacy group.

One of the lawyers for Lampert's hedge fund testified earlier this week that the 56-year-old billionaire has been portrayed as a cross between J.Gould, the late railroad tycoon, and Barney Fife, a fictional character in the popular TV show 'The Andy Griffin Show.'

Drain, the bankruptcy judge, acknowledged that Lampert had been subject to 'verbal abuse.'

'He is a wealthy individual and a big boy,' Drain said. 'And I guess he can take it.'

But he added that Lampert 'has an opportunity to not be a cartoon character.'

Apple threatens to BAN iOS apps that secretly record users' iPhone screens and gives developers just 24 hours to remove the codes that allow it

Apple is cracking down on apps that record users' screens without their consent
Firm is giving developers 24 hours to delete the code or their app will be yanked
Expedia, Hollister and Hotels.com use analytics tools that record screen activity

Apple is cracking down on apps that secretly record your screen activity.

The Silicon Valley giant has told developers that they must remove code in apps that lets them record how users are interacting with their phone or their apps will be yanked from the App Store.

It comes after a TechCrunch investigation discovered that several major companies use an analytics tool that secretly records users' screens, often without their knowledge or consent to the practice.

The report found popular companies like Expedia, Hollister and Hotels.com were using an analytics tool to record screen activity in their apps.

However, they often fail to ask for user permission and don't denote the shady activity in their privacy policies.

What's more, the analytics tool used by the companies is supposed to mask sensitive data, such as passport numbers and credit card numbers, but it failed to do so, according to TechCrunch.

Apple says this goes against its rules around user privacy.

'Protecting user privacy is paramount in the Apple ecosystem,' an Apple spokesperson told TechCrunch.

'Our App Store Review Guidelines require that apps request explicit user consent and provide a clear visual indication when recording, logging or otherwise making a record of user activity.

'We have notified the developers that are in violation of these strict privacy terms and guidelines, and will take immediate action if necessary,' they added.

Apple has reportedly begun reaching out to developers to inform them that they have to remove the screen recording code from their apps.

In some cases, developers were told they have less than 24 hours to remove the code, or their app would be yanked from the App Store.

One company that provides the analytics code, called Glassbox, claims it provides the code to customers so they can reduce app error rates, TechCrunch noted.

However, Glassbox doesn't require customers to mention they're using screen recording technology in their privacy policies.

In a statement to Engadget, Glassbox also reaffirmed that it tries to mask users' sensitive data in the screen recordings.

'Glassbox and its customers are not interested in "spying" on consumers. Our goals are to improve online customer experiences and to protect consumers from a compliance perspective,' Glassbox told Engadget.

'This information helps companies better understand how consumers are using their services, and where and why they are struggling.

'...We firmly believe that our customers should have clear policies in place so that consumers are aware that their data is being recorded -- just as contact centers inform users that their calls are being recorded,' the company added.

Glassbox also explained that the data it collects from consumers isn't shared with third parties and is 'highly secured and encrypted.'

The screen recording code is also available to Android app developers, TechCrunch said.

It's unclear, however, if Google will follow in the footsteps of Apple and ban any apps that use it.

What user data are screen- recording apps seeing?
A TechCrunch investigation revealed that many companies like Expedia, Hollister and Hotels.com are using a third-party analytics tool in their apps that lets them record users' screen activity.

App developers record the screen and play them back to see what people did in the app to see what people liked, disliked, or if an error occurred.

This means that every tap, button push and keyboard entry is recorded, screenshotted and sent back to the app developers.

This means payment information or passport and visa details could potentially be viewed by third parties.

Not every app was leaking masked data and companies like Expedia and Hotels.com were capturing the data but sending it back to a server on their own domain.
