Off-Topic / Do you kiss family members on the lips?
« on: April 01, 2010, 12:16:26 pm »Message ID: 156896
Mom's kiss can spread cavities to baby
A kiss on the mouth or sharing utensils can transmit bacteria

I'd rather reserve kisses on the mouth to lovers.  Once my uncle kissed me on the lips and it skeeved me out.  My family hugs when we see each other and sometimes kiss on the cheek.  I only kiss my mother on the cheek everyone else I just hug.  I only kiss my bf on the lips.  I would never even kiss my child on the lips (if I had one) mainly because I get cold sores once in a while and would hate to give it to them.

Offers / Only got $2 from Consumer Opinion Institute

I was looking forward to that nice crisp $5 bill but all that jumped out was a slightly crumpled $2 bill.  Are they getting cheap?  It did seem like the survey wasn't as long as the others that I was paid $5.

Off-Topic / Ask the next person anything
« on: March 13, 2010, 02:36:35 pm »Message ID: 148429
How it works:
1) Answer the question that the person before you asks.
2) Pose a question for the next person to answer.

I'll start.

FIRST QUESTION:

What made you smile today?

Off-Topic / A sad day for history
« on: February 06, 2010, 04:51:28 pm »Message ID: 137528
This is to me such a sad story.  I can't imagine a whole "race" of people being extinct.  Can you imagine being the last of your kind left on earth?

"The Great Andamanese were first massacred, then all but wiped out by paternalistic policies which left them ravaged by epidemics of disease, and robbed of their land and independence," said Survival International's director, Stephen Corry. "With the death of Boa Sr and the extinction of the Bo language, a unique part of human society is now just a memory. Boa's loss is a bleak reminder that we must not allow this to happen to the other tribes of the Andaman Islands."

Got something you need to confess?  Go ahead get it off your chest.

I confess I'm lazy
I confess I don't keep in touch with my friends as much as I should
I confess I hate talking on the telephone
I confess I don't want or need to talk on the phone with my bf every day but he wants to
I confess I pee in the shower
I confess I wear my socks more than one day in a row
I confess I do not want to give my cousin my buddy passes but he's one of my favorite cousins so I feel obligated

Your turn.

Remember when banks used to give you free stuff to open an account?  I'm checking out new banks to open a new account and the last time I opened an account (last March) I didn't get jack.  I remember years ago opening up accounts before and getting things like duffel bags, tool sets, storage containers, etc.  I just like getting free stuff.  Do you remember the coolest thing you got for opening a bank account?

Other powerful economies require more time off for illness, births

Tell me again why you think the US is #1?  This is ridiculous.  I would love to see the US follow what other countries have been doing for decades.  Why the resistance?  One day I think it will change but it will take a long time.  I will be glad to see the day when the US can get it's act together in regards to a better quality of work/family life balance that other places have had for decades.

I don't know about anyone else but I go to work sick you know why, because I will get penalized and possibly fired if I call out sick too many times.  I know there are people who abuse sick days but it's a shame when you are really sick and can't even use it for fear of being punished.

I am actually a little sick now just started coming down with something night before last and I'm trying to stop it before it gets worse.  I may not fell like going to work but I will and if I make someone else sick because I'm sick then oh well too bad I'm sorry.

NEW YORK - The United States lags far behind other nations in offering paid sick days, paid parental leave and other workplace benefits that proponents consider vital to public health and workers rights, according to research released on Tuesday.

The eight-year study found the most economically competitive nations offer forms of paid leave to workers that the United States does not, according to researchers at Harvard University and Canada's McGill University.

Of the world's 15 most competitive nations, 14 mandate paid sick leave, 13 guarantee paid maternal leave and 12 provide paid paternal leave by law, they said. Eleven provide paid leave to care for children's health and eight provide paid leave for adult family care.

The United States legally guarantees none of these policies to workers, the authors note. The findings are published in a new book, "Raising the Global Floor: Dismantling the Myth that We Can't Afford Good Working Conditions for Everyone."

The issue of paid employee leave in the United States has heated up. Advocates argue paid leave allows sick workers to stay home without financial hardship and helps prevent workers from spreading such diseases as the H1N1 flu.

Advocates for women's rights argue paid family leave is essential for women, who tend to care more for family members than do men, to compete and advance in the job market.

Opponents argue that mandating such leave policies would cost jobs and be a financial burden on businesses.

"One of the questions that's consistently asked in the United States is ... will we be able to compete if we have paid sick leave, paid maternity leave?" said author Jody Heymann of McGill's Institute for Health and Social Policy. "Will there be more unemployment? Will we lose jobs?

"What we found is that none of these policies in any way impede being highly competitive or having low unemployment," she said.

The 15 nations are Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Britain and the United States, all of which have been ranked most competitive over the last decade by the World Economic Forum, she said.

Co-authored by Alison Earle, who was a research scientist at Harvard's School of Public Health, the book is published by Stanford University Press.

Looking more widely at 190 countries, the researchers found 163 guarantee paid sick leave and 164 guarantee paid annual leave.

Also, 177 nations guarantee paid leave for new mothers, 74 nations guarantee paid leave for new fathers and 157 nations guarantee workers a day of rest each week, they said.

The United States has none of these, they said.

Facing the U.S. Congress is a proposed Healthy Families Act, which has the support of the Obama administration. It would require businesses with 15 or more employees to provide up to seven days of paid sick leave per year.

Another proposed act, the Family Leave Insurance Act, would cover paid leave for care of a new child or ill family member.

Anyone ever write a message in a bottle and throw it out in the water?  I did when I was a kid.  I just read this cool story about a guy who works cleaning up rivers and finds messages in bottles from people.  It was a cool story check it out.

Off-Topic / Roommates a rant
« on: October 27, 2009, 10:50:15 am »Message ID: 103528
I have five roommates.  I just finished cleaning because I am the only one who cleans.  My one roommate is a slob with clothes everywhere.  The rest are fine and don't have stuff everywhere (they are guys the slop is a girl ::)) I put her things in a big box the other day because I got tired of seeing it on the floor and we have three new people moving in over the next few days so we needed to make room.   There will be six people total.

She has done other things like use the account that we use to pay rent and bills as her own personal shopping spree which is frustrating because the account is overdrawn and she bounces her rent checks almost every month.  She's a deadbeat that spends her money on clothes, jewelry, magazine subscriptions and going out and wonders why she can't pay per bills and gets her cell phone cut off.  I can't wait until the end of March when the lease is up (it's in both of our names).

I'm not here much, only about one day a week but I was here the last four (two days all by myself  ;D) because I had two days of training for work.  We are all co-workers and have different schedules so everyone is always in and out different days.

I've had roommates in the past.  I can honestly say this is the last time I will have roommates.  It may be cheaper but sometimes the headaches it's causes is not worth it.  I'm really cool with the other roommates.  They never bounce checks.  It's getting to the point where I hardly talk to the deadbeat anymore she cannot be trusted.  It was a hard lesson to learn but never again.

Off-Topic / Multiple Streams of Income
« on: October 10, 2009, 08:32:45 am »Message ID: 98237
Most people only have one job and depend on that one job for their livelihood.  What happens if something happens to that one job?  A lot of people unfortunately are in that situation now and have come to a rude awakening.  Years ago I read the book Multiple Streams of Income by Robert Allen.  Some of you may be familiar with this.

Although I don't agree with every thing he says and how he just loves to push products, I do believe the only way to survive these hard economic times and to become financially stable is through multiple streams of income (preferably residual income).  I addition to my regular full time job my other income streams are doing GPT sites, affiliate marketing, survey sites.  I had some online teaching things lined up but have not had the time to do them.

I hope to open a drop shipping website and Etsy site by the end of the year so that will be another income stream.  I also do flea markets and yard sales for extra money occasionally.  I recently lost one of my biggest online income streams so I am looking to replace it.

What are your multiple income streams?  It could be investments, side jobs, an online business.  Whatever it is I hope you realize how important it is to have multiple streams of income.

Did you ever have any? I had some when I was about 9. I was really disappointed because I though they'd look just like the package NOT! They really grossed me out I actually ended up flushing them because I got sick of looking at those nasty looking things. I seem to remember they had these *bleep* on the end of them that looked disgusting to me.

Off-Topic / Favorite foreign movies
« on: October 03, 2009, 09:04:25 pm »Message ID: 96267
I love watching foreign movies. I for one get sick of watching the same types of American movies with no diversity. Foreign films are very refreshing to me. I don't know that I have a favorite because I like so many.

Here's some that I like...
Volver, Pans Labyrinth, (Spanish)
2040 (Hong Kong)
Infernal Affairs (Hong Kong) (this is what The Departed was based on)
Tideland (Canadian) very strange movie.
