They are very expensive and require lots of attention.  My niece has one and they are very social birds that like to interact with their human family.  They have a high level of inteligence and the emotional level of a five year old.  So they cannot be ignored.  If a bird like that doesn't have enough attention you will have problems with screeching and feather-plucking.  They live around 80 years.  If you make it a part of the family it will be a fun and loving and entertaining pet.

If I were you, I would look for a place that specifically sells these types of exotic birds.  Don't go to just any pet store.  A Macaw is a very big parrot.  My nephew had one and he was an awesome bird.  He took him everywhere (but if you don't want him to take off on you you've got to have his wings clipped every few months).  A store that sells these birds can usually do that for you.  If you're getting a baby Macaw, you're going to have to cook for him.  They need to have certain things when they're babies.  He'll need a BIG home, and of course, you're going to have to keep his home clean, too.  These birds are very social so they won't like it if you don't pay attention to them.  It's gonna be like having another kid, LOL.  And remember, you'll have a Macaw anywhere from 30 to 50 YEARS or longer.  I had a small parrot called an African Brown Headed Parrot, and he lived 'til he was 23 years old!

Just be sure you're really ready to make that kind of a commitment for your new friend and family member.  I'd start reading as much as I can now about the Macaw before you run right out and get one.  Some people can become overwhelmed and find out they really can't give the bird the attention and love they deserve.

Here's a starter for ya!

I would check on-line and see if there are any reputable breeders in your area, a breeder just doesn't look to make a sale.  They usually LOVE their birds, they would be able to give you expert info that can be missing in a pet store sale.
