Cat's
« on: April 20, 2011, 06:48:38 pm »
Does anyone have Cat's. I took a cat in from a street cat, she was already a full grown cat. I guess she was about a year old, she stayed with us for about 3 years before she got out and was gone for 5 months. She returned about a year ago. She has continued to get out and come back but, has been hard to catch and bring back into the house. We leave food and water for her outside but, If she hears or see's us she runs. I don't understand this cat, she has lived with us for 3 years, never been abused and will stay in the house but, when she gets the chance, she bolts. I guess she has got the street cat in her.

The cat will not change, she wants to be free.  I do feed some street cats everyday for about five years now.  I know I can not bring them into my house, because they love their freedom.  I have a house cat for 2 years, and he do not want to go outside. You can the cat out of the street, but not the street out of the cat.  :star:

Cats that get out and stay out for an extended length of time (doesn't have to be that extended) can become "ferral" (sp?), or wild. Once they get a taste of that, it's pretty hard to get them domesticated all the way again. There's something very wild in a cat that can take over, and they don't want to be "kept" anymore. Dogs are just the opposite as they will stick around even if you kick them out. However, cats will leave if they are abused.

You can feed them (lay food out), but they will run away if you approach them. I've only heard of a couple instances where wild cats became domesticated again.

@Jwallbank

One reason why the street cat keeps running away is b/c you haven't bonded w/it. When shadow came into my life, I didn't just take him in the house & forced him to stay. It took about a year. Every time I got home frm work shadow would run frm where he's hiding & rub my legs. When I walked the dogs at night he would slowly follow me & the dogs up & down the street. It became so routine that when I got home it was like the scene on BORN FREE. ME & SHADOW running towards each other screaming Shadow....tisha...borrrrrn freeeee...la,la,la,lahhh...&Shadow jumps into my arms & I spin him around just like in a Disney movie. LoL The year my own cat(ch'loe) that i grew up w/died due to cancer. She died in my arms. She was a beautiful white cat w/the bluest of blue eyes. She was the meanest bitchcat ever known. But i blame myself & my siblings 4 not taking care of her properly. Like evil children we messed w/the cat turning it so mean. But even though I got scars frm her, I still loved her to the end. A month later, shadow brought home a cat that look like paint was splatter all over her. Forensic Files was on thus she received the name SPLAT for blood splatter evidence. LoL Shadow saved Splat that nite; b/c she looked really sick; I took her to vet emergency,($100)the vet doc. gave her some antibotic injections & sent us home. The next day I found 2 still born kittens on the floor. Some how shadow knew that splat was sick & took her to me. That told me that he had bonded with & trust me enough to bring his sick sister to me for help. With taking splat to emergency room that' s when she bonded w/me that very nite. They r now both healthy & happy in my home & they follow me around like pair of puppies. I could leave the door open & there's like force there that doesn't allow them to go out. When I call they come to me like a dog would do but usually in REAL TIME SLOW MOTION. LOL   So, Bonding,creating trust, teaching boundaries, loving the cat no matter what they do to you're home & things is the key. I feel that since the cats chose me, this is why I got 2 of the best cats ever!

We have a little boy kitty named Samson. One day he showed up at my feet, out of nowhere, while I was outside talking to my son's Grandfather. And when we were all heading into the house.... he followed us. So, we kept him. He was probably about 6 months old, still little. Now he is so big! You think kids grow fast? Lol. He was an inside cat for a while, then we let him out to play and he took off for a day. Scared me to death so when he came back, I snatched him up and kept him inside since. For a while he was a little different, I guess being outside affected him, but in a bad way. Randomly growling at things, people, especially me. He's all good now though.... but if he pees on one more thing... he's going to HAVE to be an outside cat.

If she is not spayed, then her instincts will keep her on her toes. Its not that she doesnt like you-she's still feral..

Get it fixed and it will stay put in your bed/couch for eternity (except for feeding and box time) :P

Re: Cat's (a true story of a momma cat)
« Reply #8 on: April 24, 2011, 04:26:41 am »
About 20 years ago,I was living in the country ,and this skinny orange long haired cat showed up in my back yard. She was very wild and you could not even get 10 feet near her or she would just run. Well I started putting food out side near the woods for her. In about a weeks time she would come to the deck for her food. About a week after that she had brought me 3 babies and put them in my garage. Needless to say they were about 8 weeks old and wild spit fires. To make a long story short,I was able to tame the kittens,but momma cat stayed her distance. I kept the kittens and momma cat ,and within this time ,one of the kittens was having kittens of her own and guess what momma cat was going to have another litter as well. So they were both pregnant at the same time. Since momma cat would not let me touch her,but she would come to me pretty close ,I made them a place in my basement so they would be inside to have their babies. Momma cat had hers first a week later her daughter started to give birth to her babies and was having a real rough time,she was doing a lot of screaming and crying. I was trying to help her the best way I could. Momma cat decided that it was her job to help her child thru this and at that time I did not know that,momma cat fought with me on a serious bases.I had to fight with her with a stick,well finally I gave up and let her get into the box with her child to help her.I had witnessed the most wonderful thing,momma cat cut the cord off and sack from each one of those babies,she even cleaned everyone.After all the babies were born,momma brought her babies over and put them in the same box,so I had two momma cats feeding and caring for each others babies.This was one dedicated momma to her own child. After the babies were placed in a good home, I had both momma cats fixed. After having momma cat for about five years I was able to pick her up and love all over her.So see you can tame wild cats, you just have to work at it. We had moved and I took momma with me and she lived out her life inside my home,she about 15 years old when she passed. Its amazing when you think about it,how animals know when they need each other!!

Cats can forget people.  Back when I used to visit my aunt every few months, her cats remembered me.  Then I was gone for six months or so, and they forgot they were my friends.
