I’ve been thinking of a pet. Maybe a small dog. I don’t really need a guard dog, just something to play with so I don’t get too depressed. My sister-in-law has a dog and two cats. I don’t mind the cats but a dog is more outgoing and affectionate.
Cats are very affectionate towards their owners. Mine loves to jump in my lap; then he just purrs and purrs.....He plays fetch with us too. Our cat is the outgoing one.

Our dog is lazy; she never plays fetch. The most I've ever gotten her to do is pull on a rope with me, and that's not very often.
What kind of place do you live in? If it's an apartment, check out the pet policies. We were limited in the apartments we could choose when we moved here because we have a dog, and 90% of the apartments in our area only accept cats.
In the end though, make sure to take the time to watch an animal you're thinking of buying/adopting, or try to interact with it. Don't pick something just because you like how it looks.
Example: We have a super cute rabbit that my fiance picked because he liked the color. I wanted a gentle, affectionate rabbit. What we got was a slightly antisocial rabbit who wants attention only when
he wants it, and no other time. The rest of the time he's rather grumpy. I love him anyways, but still...
