Winter driving in Virginia?
« on: December 16, 2009, 02:05:34 pm »
I currently live in upstate NY, and of course the weather during the winter is horrible, and often the roads are bad, so driving is difficult. I wanted to move to VA, but I was wondering how driving conditions are during the winters there. Is there a lot of ice storms, and slippery roads? I know it must be warmer there than here, but I was thinking there is a tendency more toward ice than snow there. Anybody live in VA that could tell me? Thanks.

Just out of curiousity, what part of upstate are you in?  I'm in the Syracuse area myself.

VA doesn't get much snow.  the problem down in this area (I am in Maryland) is that people don't know how to drive in the snow.
Also -- it depends on what part of VA.

I used to live in Lynchburg Virginia. Driving up there is pretty safe most of the time. Than there is the occasional wreck up there every now and then. Virginia is also a Commenwealth state

I live close to Virginia, I live in Eastern KY.  I would say that it depends on the area of VA that you move to.  We get a few good snows during the winter, but the roads are usually cleared off pretty quick.

Don't know about VA, but am waiting to see if OH winter driving is any better or worse than Colorado.. I think ice is ice and snow is snow wherever you go.  The people overestimate themselves and their vehicles everywhere in bad weather.

Wow I would have to agree completely there I'm in MD too, you must be from close by, or is this whole state ridden with people who just can't drive?

Kymberli, I'm about 45 minutes east of Utica. And in the winter that time increases to an hour and a half sometimes.
There's a lot of people who don't know how to drive in the snow here, also. We get the speed demons who try to go 80 when theres half a foot of snow and slush on the roads, and then we get the ones who go 20 when there are a few flakes in the air.
Thank you to everyone who answered. I guess if I can handle the winters up here, I would be fine in VA. I was just wondering if they get a lot of ice storms, and whether the snow plows keep the roads clear.
