It's not even that you're promoted, even. Forums are set up to change your membergroup depending on how many posts you have to show your activity/progress. When you join you're automatically going to start off as a noob with zero posts. Once you hit 50 posts you change membergroups and become a full member automatically. Every forum out there runs this way unless the administrators change it or remove it from view.

I run an smf forum just like this one. :)

As for the benefits,.. The only benefit is being able to show the progress you've made in posts so far. Many will look at your posts and base your activity on how many posts you have. This is an easy way for admins/mods to distinguish the inactive from the active in many forums.
But one benefit of posting in this forum is the fact that you could get paid $3 for 30 posts a month. :D

Most of the forums I'm on have removed the ranks and post counts. There have been a few that feel "God" like when they have high ranks and post counts. I don't see why anyone but the poster would need to see a post count on a site like this and the rank is just silly.

In a way it shows that the poster knows what they're talking about and that it's not a total noob answering you  :dontknow:
I guess that's the basic idea behind it...

ya i concur with that

you know what they say about opinions lol, so  it is nice to know whether to choose to listen to someone or not based on that number, not definitive, but great guide

I don't know how well the rank reflects a poster's trustworthiness or experience.  Plenty of 3-5 star members give incorrect or misleading replies, and plenty of newbies actually read & understand the Terms of Service and are thus well equipped to answer questions in the forum.  It just depends.

The "better" option is a karma or reputation system in which your reputation or karma score is determined by how many positive votes you have from other members.  However, reputation systems are usually abused/misused, and many posters here are not experienced enough with forums to understand the process & concept.

It seems to me that the best solution here is to just remove the rank, and maybe the post count as well.  We do have an "award" system which we could hand out more liberally to the quality posters; that's tougher to manage but probably the most reliable way to distinguish posters.

30 posts a month is really no problem.  If you remember to make one post a day, you'll be all set.  As long as the month has 30 days, you'll make it.  Just to be on the safe side, I'll probably make two posts for the first 3 or 4 days of the month.  That way I know I'll make the deadline every month.  10 cents per post isn't bad money for forum posting.

I think you need at least 50 post to become a Junior member. It's not hard.

Call me crazy, but I like the ranking and post tracking.  I say leave it.  It's not really hurting anything.  Plus, I tend to listen a little closer when a poster like oldbuddy is posting than say a newbie who seems to be guessing or bsing about the answers. 8)

yeah it does make sense to just leave it the way it is.

Even though there are cases where a newbie can give quality advice, those cases are rare.
I would rather be able to see whos been here longer and who knows the ropes better.
Like the person above me said, when I see that it's oldbuddy posting I tend to believe it more than if it's someone with a 1 star rating.
It just gives you that little peace of mind that the advice is legit.

I don't know what rank I am. Guess we'll see after I post this. lol.  Yeah it feels good to not be a newbie.  I feel like certain people might listen to what I have to say. lol

What does it take to get promoted?
Just keep posting and they even pay you to do it.
How did you get your money so high?  :notworthy:

The promotion was certainly a great idea.  ...
The general rules apply to every forum, you get ranked up according to how many posts you have.
From my experience that is.
