The fact is, the United States doesn't have an 'official language', and only about half the states do.  Therefore, until English becomes one, or you live in a state in which it IS the official language (in Arizona it is), you really can't force someone to learn English to become a US citizen.  They have the freedom to speak whatever language they want.  But, you would think it would behoove them to learn and speak English for their own convenience, since you know, 80% of Americans speak only English...

Anywhoodles, if we force them to learn English then wouldn't it be correct to say that we should help them learn it? I think people are just nit picking when it comes to this learn English thing. Trying to find anything and everything to complain about. How many times do you run into someone who can't speak English? And when you do how horrible is it? It doesn't ruin your whole day does it? If it does then your priorities may be a bit out of wack.

 I admit them learning it wouldn't totally hurt. I'm trying to learn Spanish and so far it's been pretty painless. Small thought though...if we force them to learn it...how will we check if they know it? And what if they have an accent and it's still hard to understand? Does that mean they're breaking the law? Do we send in police to have a conversation with everyone who immigrated here? People are just trying to find anything to complain about.

Do any of you realize that some of the people who come here illegally aren't even old enough to say "nuuuuu I don't want to go in here illegally!" Some children are brought here by their parents illegally, they grow up here, go to school, graduate. Then are stuck here. No place to go back to, no job to get here because they're deemed "illegal." It's not as cut and dry as you think it is. But people are so "they took my jobs" or "they're breaking the law cause the law calls them illegal" that they don't even take the time to get both sides of the story other then their own.

If the are LEGAL citizens then they would KNOW English. It is part of BECOMING a LEGAL citizen...

I lived in Tucson for two years. Got out just in time...right before all of the kidnappings and home invasions started. My Son couldn't find a job because most of them were taken by 'people' that would work for a lower wage and get paid without reporting...yes, most employers did this. Every time I went to Walmart or the Mall I was asked if I was 'looking to score'...Always had to order fast food by a # off the menus because the person didn't understand me and would get angry when I would say "what?"...Little kids were always trying to sell handmade things or food on the street everywhere. I was 92 miles from Nogales,Mexico and yet it felt like I was in Mexico. The border patrol helicopters flew over my home every two hours ~~ it was a constant fear and I was happy to leave.

They actually do pay taxes. That's what ITIN's are for. A lot of them actually report the money they make and pay taxes on it by using an ITIN. Those who don't go by way of ITIN and instead use another persons name or a fake social are getting taxes taken out of their checks. Yet they never reclaim them.
