Today is National Coming Out Day
« on: October 11, 2010, 03:16:08 pm »
It is 2010, and according to the HRC, nearly 90% of GLBTQ youth experience harassment in schools.

Today, I am coming out as a Straight Ally for my gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and questioning friends.

This harassment needs to stop, and that starts with Straight Allies who come OUT and show support.  I support my gay friends.  Do you?

Of course. I look forward to the day when open-minded viewpoints spread around and it's not going to be a big deal at all. John Corvino is actually going to give a presentation at my school  on wednesday and I hope I get to see it!

I am sure both of you know it from my previous posts, but for anyone who doesn't, yes I do, always have, and always will - no matter what day it is.
I just saw this comment on a blog and have to share it:

Quote
NCOD isn't about BEING gay. Its about choosing to be OUT. Because homosexuality is as inherent as the color of your skin.

I guess I support it, but I just wish they would have picked another day.  Columbus has had this day in his honor for a very, very long time.  And just to clearify my understanding of whether you are born gay or it is a learned trait, I believe you learn it through your growing years.  It is just like leadeship, you are not born a leader, you learn it through the people you hang around with and you usually have a mentor to help you.

Why do we honor a man who, if he were alive today, would almost certainly be sitting on Death Row awaiting execution?

I haven't been on a camp out since I was in eighth grade in germany. I used to love going the air was so crisp and trying to put up the tent was comedy.

i am one of those people who have been harassed in school for being transgender. It is really good to come to a support group and be united with a GLBT community as lots of people are supporting us. Not only are we getting support, but so is every ally and people that support gays, lesbians, and bisexuals.

Thank you for being out... I believe that the more people are out and open about who they are, that the more people will realize that people are people, and labels are absolutely ridiculous.  My dad used to be one of the most homophobic men I have ever met, and then when he met one of my very best friends, he realized that people are people.  Granted, my dad is 62 and his acceptance of people is somewhat stunted, but it is still a step in the right direction.

I believe there is not enough support on this.

People need to be more supportive of people that choose different things in life that don't suite everybody.

If more straight people in the world gave support and discussed this more out in the open and also parents not raise their children against it than

we probebely wouldn't have as many problems with this subject as we have to day and always.

Funny story I knew a man that was so homofobic and always spoke bad of gay people calling them all kind of names, and  one day come to find out

that he's a closet bisexsual and been with men and loves it; wow what a hipocrit.
