Who taught you how to cook?
« on: November 19, 2010, 09:21:29 am »
My mother did not work outside of the home so she did all the cooking.  I never cooked until I got married.  As to who taught me how to cook?  It was Betty Crocker and her cookbook.  I even learned how to bake bread from the cookbook.  Most things were a success except for the first gravy I made after cooking chicken.  It was not gravy, it was more like school paste.

I learned from my mom and from inventing things on my own.

My Mom and Aunts. Italian Women that could cook in their sleep. Unfortunately I married a man that hated Italian food, a Meat and Potatoes guy. I learned to adapt. Thank God we're Divorced now and I can eat Pasta anytime I feel like it.

I learned to cook from my mom who learned to cook from her mom. Good down home country cooking. Some of my greatest memories are of watching my mom and my aunt and grandma all cooking together at the holidays and for get togethers. Three of the best cooks in the world.

My hunger.  My Mom worked during most of the day so I cooked stuff based on what I saw her and my sisters did.  I use my knowledge about cooking and use it with other recipes I find online and in cook books now.

Both of my parents cooked so I learned a little from both of them: from my dad, how to grill and from my mom, basic sauces, casseroles, etc. As I got out on my own, I strated exploring a little more, developing my tastes and adding to my skills. Now my best friend is a wonderful "chef" (her dream is to actually be a chef in a restaurant) and she has been teaching me a lot about how to cook. We also tend to watch similar shows now, esp on Food network, and will compare notes about what we've discovered.

:sad1: I wish I could say that I learned how to cook from my Mother. But my Mother was a terrible cook. I was lucky enough later on in life to be able to attend Culinary Arts school in New Orleans. I have gained alot of knowledge from working in restaurants and watching others. But I guess it is also an added plus to really love to eat. HA!HA! Having that habit one has to learn or change habits, right? HA!HA! :peace:

I am still learning! Some things I picked up from mom, but she really just stuck with the basics like meatloaf and spaghetti. I read a lot of other peoples recipes and tips, especially Cooks Country on PBS. I love the way they break it all down.

I have to agree on that. I have italian in my blood so every christmas we all get together and make homemade sauce and raviolis. You don't make you don't help eat. Rule of thumb when your making 200~ 300.

Nobody. I just picked it up on my own. I learn by watching other people prepare their own dishes. I like to keep it simple. There are way too many food preparation tutorials on Youtube.  :)

Cooking is like artwork, it's whatever you think it should be... at least that's what I thought when I was ten years old with a whole bowl of sour cream and sugar... can we say gross anyone? I still have no clue what I must've been thinking.

My household was full of extended family members.  The women took care of the kitchen, children, laundry, and all the stuff women did back then.  I was fortunate that my mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great aunt and a few other older female cousins were around to teach me.  Right now I think I could cook a tree and make it taste good lol ::)
