My mom taught me how to drive when I was 11 years old. We would go out on the canal banks in California and I would drive for 2 or 3 hours at a time. When I was finally able to take Drivers Training in High School driving came natural to me and I was the best in the class. Those are very special memories of my mom and the times we spent together.

It was a mix between one of my friends and my dad. When I first got my permit, my dad didn't want me driving on the road just yet... And he'd hardly let me drive his and my mom's car because I wasn't on their insurance. However, my and my friends would go hang out once a week and I would ride with one of my friends. About 50% of the time, she would let me drive her car. (Despite the law. She was only 19 at the time... I was supposed to be driving with someone 21 or older. *shrug*) Later on my parents got me a car, and my dad would ride in the passenger seat beside me and coach.

I didn’t feel mentally equipped to drive behind the vehicle at 16. I took the course anyway in high school. I waited a few years in college until I felt ready to learn to drive, took and passed the written test at the DMV, then paid the driver instructor for training and received my license. After a few more years gone by, I thought I forgotten how to drive until I got my own car and practiced on my own.

No one actually taught me how to drive. In fact, no one actually taught me anything. (except for the obvious things we 'learn' in school...) I pretty much had to raise myself and my older sister. But that's an entirely different story.
Anyway, I never went through a Driver's Education course and I so very rarely got to drive w/ my mom or another adult. I do remember my uncle taking me out for the first time and letting me drive. I did pretty good, but of course I wasn't perfect. He was very impressed, and even more so when he found out I'd never had any kind of lessons before. (And no, I hadn't even stolen my mom's car for a joyride or anything like that.) I guess I just sorta already 'had it in me', I dunno....  I'm a good driver, and have not had any accidents. Plus, I've only had 2 curb checks since I started driving, but I know there's still many more years to come so who knows....

My Dad (oh, the stories of being taken out at 5 AM on a Saturday morning into Pittsburgh) and this Driver's Ed instructor Mr. Frick.  Mr. Frick read straight from a book to teach, but he was hilarious when he taught.  He would cuss at cars and whistle at women (He was about 70 years old at the time)
