I'd say like 90% of them are awesome.
The other 10%..... Like radlady we have German Shepherds too. There are people in our building who, I kid you not, literally scream and jump when we get off the elevators. One woman has twice run screaming out the front door when we passed by.
I mean, I get being afraid of dogs, I used to be that way too. But I never acted like a histrionic fool just at the sight of one.
If you have ever been bitten or mauled by a dog, then you will get why some people are terrified. If you ever saw it happen to someone, will make you take another stance of man's best friend. They have a leash law here in California and it's strictly enforced. What people don't understand, is that although dogs are domesticated....they are still animals. I've seen dogs get a taste of the right kind of blood (human, animal, reptile, etc.), and completely change. Some breeds have some genes that are wild. Take a half breed wolf/dog. There are a lot of them in Alaska. Many people think they can domesticate them, but find out it's an unstable balance. Some dogs have been bred to be attackers because it's already in their genes. It's no coincidence that German Sherperds are used mostly for K9 units. There is something in the genes that can be quickly trained/changed to be dangerous. Do you know that most police officers do not befriend their K9 counterparts because it "softens" them.
Any dog is capable of changing. I do not like dogs myself and carry a weapon with me when I go walking around the neighborhood. If your dog comes at me with no leash, it's going to get hurt. It's either me or them.
Sorry for taking this off topic, but the above comment caught my attention and calling someone a histrionic fool for a substantiated fear is not fair.
