SOCIAL SECURITY AT AN END?
« on: July 18, 2011, 01:00:08 am »
I have heard a lot or talk lately about there being no Social Security checks released the month of August!  Is it just "political talk" because of the upcoming election?  Or do you think it will really happen?   This is a major concern with my husband as he is planning to retire this year.  What are your views?   :dontknow:

It's scare tactics at work and I doubt if even Obama wants to butt heads with 50 MILLION mean and nasty old folks, because that's just like trying to take a juicy bone that still has  meat on it away from a bulldog.

I agree with Oldbuddy. This is pure political posturing and a scare tactic. These politicians want to get re-elected, don't they?  ;D

I watched Suze Orman talk about social security and she said she's not worried about social security going away, she's worried about them continuing to extend the age people will be eligible for SS.

It's not the government extending it, in fact they are trying to reduce it by starting at a later age. It's medical science allowing more people to live longer.

Absolutely and people are now having less kids which eventually mean less people contributing to social security and on top of that less jobs. So it comes down to more money going out than coming in.

At some point in time one demographic or the entire tax paying population is going to bite the bullet so to speak.  Taxes will inevitably be raised or benefits will be reduced or wiped out.  Sure their will be uproar at first, but people will move on and adapt.  Income witholding in many parts of the world are much higher than they are here.

All that Social Security talk worries me because I'm hoping to retire in 5 years but may not be able to.

I am concerend about it it because my husband had a brain injury when is was 17 and he only worked under the table (he did't know that hurt him in the long run) He started recieving SSI in 2001 and in 2008 I became disabeled but I don't recieve anything cuz the Judge says I am disabeled but not enough, so we live off my husbands $641 a month and we are really struggling and if they take that away we will be in trouble. I would get what I paid in so his SSi would go down because he never paid in.  When I was working I didn't worry so much about his disability but I can't work now and the judge says I can get a job that will allow me to sit, stand and lay down for a while but I can't find anyone who will give me a job full time with those limitations and not lifting over 10lbs, so I don't know what we will do.

Yeah they'll decrease it and phase it out slowly so people won't revolt.

People have been saying social security coming to an end as far back as I can remember.  I don't think the baby boomers will let this happen.

They can do away with social security for all I care.  Give me the money they take out of my check for it now.  They have been telling my generation that ss will not be around when we retire so I never planned on depending on ss to be my only income in retirement.  I wish I could opt out so they can stop taking that money out of my check so I can have more money to invest it how I want now.
