I agree with you in that mutual respect is a key factor in a debate.  There should be due consideration on both sides.  There are many in here, on both sides, who do just that.  There are some who don't.  And of all debates, I feel religious debates can get more heated than many others.

As a Christian, I know what I believe and why I believe and it's my choice.  I'm going to respect others in here that may not agree with me on my beliefs.  That's okay - they have their choices to make, too.  I believe it's my duty, as a Christian, to spread the Word, so to speak, but I will not force it on anyone.  I like to listen to other views as well - fairness is a must here.  I don't feel I hide behind my religion but it is certainly an influencer of my life and my attitudes and thoughts.  If I quote Scripture, it's because we use God's Word to learn more about Bible history, God Himself, how to grow spiritually, and so naturally, we will use Scripture to back up points or remarks we make or are trying to prove.

I don't turn every conversation I have with family, friends, and strangers I may meet (whether in person, in forums, etc.) into a God discussion.  But if something comes up or a question is asked then yes, I'll answer or discuss it, but definitely not hide behind it.  I know many Christians and non-Christians who do the same.  I agree, however, there are some who get defensive quickly about religion, and either spark out at someone or not listen to their point of view.  That's judgmental and I feel it's wrong for someone, basically, to give the impression that it's "my way or the highway."
