not remembering
« on: November 01, 2011, 06:16:51 pm »
Have you ever had anyone approach you and start talking and you don't know who they are?  Somtimes I just out and ask them their name.  Is this proper?

It happens to me all the time. I usually try to keep them talking until I hear something familiar and if that fails I'll just keep pretending

Yeah sometimes, you just have to casually ask their name. Just be like "so what does your mother call you?" then make up some bullsh!t excuse for asking that.

I live in a city with a large homeless situation. I have learned to walk away before these people can ask for money. It's unfortunate that you can't have a passing conversation that does not involve begging.

I work with different group of people every day and sometimes I might work with a couple people for several days at a time then afterwards not see or work with them for months.  This one particular coworker I worked with once or twice but I would see him around sometimes.  I totally forgot his name but he remembers mine.  I feel bad asking what his name is because I've known him for about two years now.

I tried to sneak and look at his ID but couldn't see it.  I haven't seen him in a long time now so I don't even know if he is still with the company.  When I would see him I would say hey how's it going but I would never say hey (whatever his name was) because I didn't know and I always felt bad that I didn't remember but after two years I was too embarrassed to ask for his name after such a long time.

As I get older it seems my memory is failing.  It sometimes takes awhile before I remember a name or place, but if I wait long enought usually I can come up with it.

The saddest thing is when the senior has Alzheimer's and doesn't recognize their husband or family anymore. That's hard on the one who does know them.

Happens to me all the time but @ 73 I find that my brain only retains the important things. That might be what they mean by the wisdom of the aged (?) If I can't pick up a clue as to the person's name after a few minutes of conversation I usually apologize and ask. When I'm told their name I react very enthusiastically so they know I welcome the conversation. 'Bout all I can do.

Memory is a strange thing.  I can't blame not remembering names on my age because I've always been bad with putting names with faces - it's just worse as I get older  :dontknow:

Oh, unfortunately, it is happening more often than I want to admit.  I had an old school mate request to be my friend on Facebook that I honestly cannot remember!  I have been looking for my old high school annuals so that I can look her up but I don't know where my husband has hid them!  He doesn't like to read about my old boyfriends (32+ years ago, even!).
Have a wonderful day!

I think its okay to ask for a person's name if you don't remember it. Some may find it embarassing but to overcome that I just ask them what their full name is. To cover I mention how I don't have a middle name. It usually works.

I politely tell them that they look familiar but the name has escaped me.  Why act like you know them if you cant remember the name?  Just be honest.

If I can't remember it after talking to them for a while, I will eventually apologize and tell them that my memory has failed me and I can't remember their name.  I will probably make a joke about remembering and we can both laugh.

I am in the bar business and it happens to me all the time.

I first try to give it a few minutes to remember them by what
they say to me and if I really can't remember, I apologize and
tell them that I am drawing a blank as to their name.

I blame it on a disease called "Sometimers"
Sometimes I remember -- Sometimes I don't
