I like the site loseit. They have a calorie counting app or you can use the website many foods you eat everyday, even fast food are listed in the database so you don't have to do a lot of researching every time you eat. I was amazed just how many calories were in some foods and how huge my portions were. It was a great start for getting on track for me since it made me have a better idea of the nutritional and caloric content of food. I have also been swimming and taking martial arts. It helps to be active and do activities that you like so you are better able to stick with it. Good luck.

Losing weight is mainly a matter of reducing calories! And you do not have to exercise. So why are there so many opinions and so many diets. Moderation helps and exercise burns calories, adds to a healthy lifestyle. The cardio I do every day, is done mainly for my brain and heart. Just losing weight with no exercise will mean lose of muscle tissue. When my mother wanted to lose weight with no exercise, just her gardening; I suggested, chair squats, wall pushups and some other chair exercises, that she could do while watching television. Many overweight people want to lose fat, and improve their appearance. Moderation is needed to change lifestyles a little. Most people want a quick fix. They ate incorrectly for six months put on 24 pounds and want to take it off in six days or six weeks. Even six weeks will take some work. Moderation also takes in to consideration that our bodies are different. Some have fast or slow metabolism (although the differences are very slight, a big deal is made of it) or other differences. Not saying much about our mental state and motivation. That is why some people need support groups like Weight Watchers or a gym like Curves.

So how do we reduce the calories, by using many of the aforementioned ideas. One of my favorites, is drink water. It is easier to drink a glass of water then run a mile to burn the calories of a can of soda water. A mentor of mine said we all know what to do. Eat fresh fruit, vegetables and lean protein. ( if you are a VEGAN or vegetarian, correct food combinations for protein) My food journal shows I eat a lot of unhealthy snacks. A good friend of mine, that I used to work out with, has been eating six meals a day since high school. He is a bodybuilder and his waist size and body fat is important to him. And having food in his body keeps his blood sugar at a level; which keeps him from unhealthy snacking. "Sugar" in some form is in much of our processed foods today. (not going to mention all the "salt") As a healthy vegetarian, I could not keep weigh on unless I lifted weights. At that time I ate like a pig, but all those water based vegetables, kept the weight off. (I was watching a tv show that said most people only eat beans once a month, and many get eat few healthy grains.) So remember most people don't lose the weight because they don't take it one day at a time, just the way it went on. Good Luck!

I've lost weight by tracking the calories I eat and what I burn.  I still eat whatever I want but more in moderation. I still have soda and snack cakes all the time yet I've lost 40 pounds since March because I make sure I track it and make it fit in with my food for the day

Many times I have tried to lose weight but it has been so hard I wish this weight would just fall off. Im 5 5 and i weight 170 im tired of this weight help.  :sad1:

I'm 5'4, and in May of 2009 I weighed 172 pounds.
By May of 2010 I was down to 111 pounds.
I found that weight to low, so I healthfully gained until I reached a weight (135) that worked for me.

I can only tell you what worked for me:
#1.  I joined a free online food journal site/community that believes in Balanced Nutrition. Now, they also have a mobile food journal system.
#2.  Get a digital food scale and use it.
#3.  Switch to Diet sodas, calorie free sodas, or calorie free waters, and fat free milk.
#4.  Switch to 100% whole grains in any way you can; cereals, breads, pastas. Remember FIBER is your friend. (*Goal: 2 grams dietary fiber for every 90 calories in a serving).
#5.  Reduce your High Fructose Corn Syrup intake as much as you can. It's in a lot of stuff, but it is do-able.
#6.  Check out alternative sweeteners. I personally like Stevia based sweeteners. Which sweetener is something you'll have to decide.
#7.  Do not starve yourself! Snack on fruits/vegetables, ice cream, chips etc. Look for 100 cal snacks, & only eat 1 serving.
#6.  Go to Library, check out any of these books: "Weight Watcher's All Time Favorites," "Weight Watcher's New Complete Cookbook," "The            Complete Idiot's Guide to Glycemic Index Weight Loss," "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Low-Carb Meals," "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Terrific Diabetic Meals," and any "Hungry Girl" recipe book you like. Find recipes that work for your tastes.

It's not a diet per say, but retraining yourself in balanced nutrition.
I hope this helps you get started.

I am sure you are doing all the usual stuff, watching what you eat, thinking thin, counting calories, but I found that the best way was walking, walking faster than a stroll and for at least a half an hour a day.  Some ways are easy. take the stairs, park at the back of the parking lot, get a dog.

I have stopped eating close to bedtime and no midnight snacking and have noticed a difference in my weight.  Any other tips out there?

Be sure to burn more calories than you take in.  Avoid junk food.  Things like carrots, celery and broccoli are filling and basically have no calories.  Apples are great for a sweet tooth.

I'm a mother of 6 too.  Usually I'm able to snap back to a size 7 without effort in less than 2 weeks but after my last one I got down to a size 10 and stayed there. I started trying to lose weight when my youngest son was 3 and it took me 2 years to do it.  I've lost 25 pounds this year, I lost 17 last year and gained it all back, which I'm determined not to do this time.  I have a new found love for working out and have just started drinking more water but counting calories is what really helps me to lose.  I'm currently a size 7, I only have 10 more pounds to go til I get to my desired weight, which I aim to achieve b/f the new year.  Good luck!

I can definitely understand how you may feel. I'm a mother of six, and two years after I gave birth to my sixth child I decided that I needed to take a contraceptive. After a year of taking birth control I went from weighing 132lbs to 185lbs. Loosing weight isn't easy. I have gotten down to 160 lbs by simply changing my eating habits. No fried foods, or sodas. I drink flavored water to help my cravings. Many of us have food addictions that we don't know about. Eating several small meals a day helps your metabolism. You have to incorporate some form of exercise into your daily routine. The more you exercise, the more calories you will burn. The less calories that you take in throughout the day the better your chances are of loosing weight. I have traded in many of my bad eating habits for healthier choices. It's working. YOU CAN DO IT.

These are some really good tips! I especially like #7. I read somewhere though that diet sodas are actually more harmful than regular sodas, IDK how true that is b/c there's so much conflicting info about food out there. I kicked soda in 2009 and drink Sam's Club flavored water whenever I need some acid, which is rare.  I think the main thing is to count calories.  When I first started doing so I was amazed at how I would THINK I was eating healthy and really wasn't, like salad dressing for example, with the amount of salad dressing I put on my salads, which really isn't too much, I could've eaten a juicy burger for the same amount of calories.  Lots of people count carbs and fiber and avoid certain foods, I eat whatever I want and try to keep my daily intake under 1,000 calories a day.

"There is no quick fix"- CORRECT!!! That's why I don't do diets and decided not to cut certain things out of my diet that I know I will eventually eat.  Lifestyle changes is what keeps the weight off.  I eat whatever I want and try to keep my calorie intake under 1,000 calories per day.

Diet and exercise. There's no quick fix. No equipment or special routine will work without your dedication. My largest was 210 lbs. I changed my diet alone and lost weight. I substituted white rice for brown and white bread for whole wheat. I added some more veggies and I did lose weight. I'm not where I want to be as far as appearance but that requires exercise which I kind of start and stop and start and stop.

Change your diet first (more veggies and whole grains) and stick with it and you'll see a difference. Work 10 minutes of exercise into your day just to get used to it and gradually add more time every so often.

It has to be a lifestyle change. There's no quick fix.

Eat sensibly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have a sensible healthy breakfast every day. Do Not overeat! Watch those calories! Eat lunch a small one. Eat dinner!  Don't eat less than 1500 calories a day. Eat more fruit and vegetables and take some kind a mega multiple vitamin and minerals and exercise. Snack on fruit or veggies when you get hungry. Get a jumprope and jump 100 times in the morning and 100 times at night. Good luck!
