Oh Jowbow, I know how that medical stuff can wipe you out.  I'm sorry they haven't found what the problem is.

I kept track of how much we were spending on everything a while back.  So we have put all of our credit cards in the freezer (By the time you thaw out the ice tray, you often have decided it is not worth it) and are paying cash only.   I have found if you find something you think you really need, sometimes if you wait 24 hours and think about it, it is NOT something you really need.  The 24 hour cooling off/thinking about it period has saved me a lot of cash.  Also if you are paying just cash or ATM it makes the money seem more real, and when it is gone it is gone!

Good philosophy - often times waiting is a good idea. I'm very "stingy" and only try to buy what I need, with an occasional splurge. I don't mind spending a little extra on food sometimes, since that's more of a need, but often times other things are more a want than a need.

I wish my dad would keep better track of money. Sure i still live at home and he pays for all the bills. But he doesn't always think before he acts.

We are starting to have to really pinch pennys now compared to a couple of years ago. And now with the paycheck taxes going up 2% it will get tighter. If the working person is going to be taxed more i believe he welfare checks should be cut also. After all they are not contrubiting anything. Although i draw social security it isn't much and the 15 years i lived and worked beside my ex didn't count for you know what. And we paid through the nose. women are always on the bottom of the list.

It bites! Seems like you can't win money wise.  My money runs out before the month no matter how well I try to budget or no matter how well I do at trying to save money at the grocery or whatever.  I'm sure things will be better with you when your husband can go back to work, both my sons are out of work so we have to all share a very small income. Best of luck to you!

Don't wait until its too late. Saving money when you have the income available is a lot easier then when something happens in your life that can cause you to loose it all. Don't wait until you loose your job, or an investment tanks, or a medical emergency emerges and you're forced to use credit and have to pay huge medical bills. Start saving now, when things are looking up because sooner or later you'll need that money when things turn around and stop going your way.

It requires discipline, but once you get into the routine of saving money you'll start to enjoy the fact that you have money saved for when things go bad. It's actually a rather calming feeling. It's difficult to save when all around you there are people telling you that you have to buy this and that. Set a clear goal and stick to it. Not only would it improve your financial security, it can prove to yourself that you have the ability to achieve goals you set out to do

I had to totally get used to living on a lot less.  I used to have the best of everything.  My jobs generally paid well.  Then my health deteriorated.  My last job did not have health insurance and the entire thing wiped me out.  I like the suggestion about waiting 24 hours before making a purchase.  A lot of times, it isn't something you really need.  I use coupons.  We do not have cable--just internet, so I have learned to watch sports and other programs I like on free websites.  I shop at three different stores to get the best prices on what we need.  It is actually becoming interesting to see how much can be saved and what we actually need versus what we don't.

Whenever I buy something (other than food) its usually from a thrift store, flea market, or yard/garage sale. Most of the time I can pickup something that could sell on eBay, amazon, or craigslist for more. I literally get paid to buy things.

Some time I wonder to because it doesn't go far anymore at least now.  We have been living off his SSI since 2008 for three of us and we did better than, than now so I know what you mean.

It is not so important how much money you make, but how it is spent.  Keep a diary of the money coming in and how it is spent.  You will figure out quickly if you can save money being spent unwisely.
