I believe that people who drink alot, must be sad or in depression, of course thats what I believe. Other might start just have a good time and then get addicted to drinking and that when it goes bad. hey, but what do I know, I've never drank in my life. It's only my oppinoin.  ;D

People drink a lot for a lot for reasons. They can be wanting to go out to fun or sometimes, people drink since they want to have the thrill of it. This is mainly if they have nothing else to do.

Well, I understand many people will look at it in a negative way, I in some way I also agree with them, I must also say it isn't typical. Not everybody drinks for stress, escape, or a break from reality, many don't even have serious problems to begin with. I must also say, alcohol, as with many other addictions, is bad and detrimental, only if used not responsibly or in moderation. I myself am a very happy man, and have absolutely no problems worth stressing for. I don't wish to escape reality. The main reason I occasionally drink is for socializing with friends at home or at a club, or watching a Football game. I often do those activities without alcohol involved, but some times alcohol is involved.

It also depends if you have mental issues and whatnot; furthermore, there is also the issue of alcohol turning you into a different person. Alcohol doesn't affect me negatively, it makes me a nicer persons if all.
It becomes a burden if you can't handle it, if it's controlling you, if it isn't recreational, or it is not used in moderation, it's affecting others, or it makes you aggressive or confrontational. The same could be say for any other drug or substance.

To have some fun. In my case a little bit of forgetting the pain my head that I live with daily. It actually makes me relax some.

Escape, social interaction, addiction...  I drink sometimes a little more than I should when hanging out with friends, but I stay off when with family (exception certain cousins during celebrations).

I agree with the previously listed reasons- to relax, socialize, or escape pressure.  I feel like if you have to be inebriated to enjoy yourself then you really need to do something about your reality.  I drink twice a year (when I visit my hometown and go to the casino with my sisters) with a two glass minimum. I have a guy friend that says he doesn't drink a lot but from what I can tell he drinks regularly, which I contribute to his apparent erectile dysfunction and not the anxiousness he blames it on.

To relieve stress and relax. I drink occasionally to relax but nothing else. Drinking doesn't take the problems away they will still be there until it's done. I don't get that one

Well, because adults have a lot of responsibilities and sometimes that can cause a lot of stress...For some people alcohol relieves that stress.

Drinking is a huge waste of money.  I use to drink and party like most people in my early 20's, and just think of all the money I wasted.  =-D

I think I drank more when I was a teenager than adult.  I drink to relax and get out of my head.  If I'm depressed I try not to drink because it won't make me happier.  Hope all is well with everyone.
