« on: February 03, 2013, 07:57:36 pm »
do you think the a flag should have been thrown for pass interference near the end of the game?

I Think it was a Bad Call From The Ref.   :BangHead: >:(

I think it was a good no-call.  Yes, I think it was interference, but I don't think he the ball was catchable since it was overthrown.

They turned the ball over and did not execute enough times to win. Can you really say that Baltimore did not deserve to win because of one play?

I was rooting for the 49 niners and thought the game was very exciting after the lights came back on but the ravens really played a better game.

I don't think the play would have been successful anyway, but, it does drive me crazy that the refs seem to sometimes call stuff and then at other times they ignore the penalty.

It was a definite hold which was why the ball went over the receiver's head but it's one of those calls that can go either way.  Some refs are more picky than others about those types of calls and I expect they like to keep the penalties to a minimum in the Super Bowl.

If you take a look at that call it was warranted! The ball landed about two yards out of bounds, if he had caught it he would have been out of bounds also. Plus I am not really an AFC Proponent but, the Ravens were much more impressive than the 49ers. THey didn't start playing until after half time and they could not catch up.

It could have been called, but it was really just a heave by Kaepernick so that may have factored into the no call.

That last no-call should have definitely been called, not as pass interference (where whether the ball was catchable would be taken into account) but rather as holding. In that play, the defenders arms had almost completely encircled the receiver, and his hands were grabbing onto the jersey (you can even see the jersey getting tugged by the hold). If it was just a little hand-checking, then I'd agree that it should have been a no-call. But when the receiver's momentum is being slowed, his jersey is being tugged, and the defender has his arms around the receiver, it should have been an obvious holding call.

Even going with the theory that the ball was "uncatchable" is suspect... The ball was only about a yard or two beyond the receiver's hands; taken into account that the receiver's momentum is slowed, he might have been able to catch the ball had he not been held. Also although the ball landed out of bounds, while it was in the air at about the time the receiver was reaching for the ball, the ball was still in bounds. Furthermore, whether or not a ball is in bounds doesn't matter as long as the receiver can catch it and keep both feet in bounds. Newly Hall of Famer Chris Carter made his induction by doing just that; catching *bleep* on his finger tips and keeping just his toes touching the ground in bounds. Since it was so close, one cannot say whether or not the ball was uncatchable.

Finally the argument that the "best team" won anyways is stupid as well... Although Baltimore outscored SF in the first half, the tables got switched in the 2nd. As far as I know, there are 4 quarters in a football game, not 2. Just look at how SF got to the Super Bowl; they had a great comeback game in the NFC Championship game, coming from a half-time deficit to beat Atlanta. Had the call been made, SF might have gone ahead of Baltimore and with the amount of time left, may have won instead. So I completely disagree that "THey didn't start playing until after half time and they could not catch up." since they clearly could catch up and could have even won the game.

I found this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TinDQSUww5U) that shows this play along with some other blown calls... The holding at the end of the game when Baltimore took the safety, although while evident, I don't think it really effected the outcome (may have given SF a few extra seconds in the ensuing free kick, but SF didn't do much with that kick anyways). However the "helmet to helmet" no-call was also a big blown call. Not only should that have been a personal foul called, but also the receiver had the ball in possession and had taken a few steps, so if anything it should have been counted as a reception with the ball on the 3 or 4 yard-line.

I was the one cheering for the Ravens and I thought the game was getting pretty ugly by halftime for the 49ers when the score was 28 - 6. However, the 49ers put up a good fight in the last 2 quarters of the game and came up short. I think the Ravens deserved to win anyways and Ray Lewis can now retire as a champ :)
