I am from the Philladelphia area also and we always called them hoagies too.

I've always called them subs. I've heard hoagie used but I've never heard grinder before.
  In mas MA they are called subs,   some places call the grinders, except when they make philly ssteak subs :)

  I have heard of people calling sandwiches both hoagie and grinder's...but growing up I have always called big sandwickes subs....dont think I could ever change

We usually say subs, but sandwiches can also be called hoagies or grinders here.

I like sandwiches, it just sounds more natural and organic to me. I never really got into saying "grinder." Subs and hoagies to me are just really over the top sandwiches that are taste bud inciting.

I was raised in Media PA then moved to CA in 1973.  I was in Media on vacation a few weeks ago and forgot how absolutely marvelous a hoagie tastes.  It was like being in heaven.

I've always called them subs,but I've heard all three.

The Dagwood is also my favorite.I've made a few of those in my time. ;D

Here in central florida I have only heard them called subs unless its someone from another area of the country then I have randomly heard people call them hoagies.
