Hey bidgedshult!!! I don't know which island/s you will be going to while in Hawaii.

My husband and I were on Maui many years ago.

1.  ROAD TO HANA:  We drove the Road to Hana, which is a very scenic road with MANY MANY MANY HAIRPIN curves....The Hana Highway (HI-360) has 620 curves and 59 bridges. The road leads you through flourishing rainforests, flowing waterfalls, plunging pools and dramatic seascapes. There are plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the lovely views, so get an early start and take your time on your drive.

We bought a cassette tape that was like a having a tour guide tell us what to look for on the way and when to stop and see something particularly spectacular.

It was beautiful, but if you are a nervous driver on narrow roads, perhaps this isn't for you.

2.  HALEAKALA CRATER.  We also got up very early one day and went to the top of Haleakala Crater to see the sunrise.  TAKE BLANKETS as it is CHILLY up that high!
Depending where you get started from on Maui, it can take you up to two hours to drive the Haleakala Highway (HI 37) and then up the winding Haleakala Crater Road leading to the summit of Haleakala. It’s an early wake-up call, but the reward is well worth it.

3.  PEARL HARBOR MEMORIAL:  This is on the island of Oahu.  It was very moving and well worth the extra plane trip from Maui where we were staying.

4.  SNORKELING is fun....we just snorkeled off the beach where our motel was.  There are charters you can take also.

5.  PARA SAILING.  My husband went up on a 800 foot para sail trip.  Great fun!

I also enjoyed body surfing in the surf right on our beach and trying to catch the little sand crabs that burrow in the sand.  They are quick!!

Have fun!!

I'm sure you will find lots to do there but I'd look online before I went to find out when things are happening. Just do a search.

I will be visiting Hawaii soon for the first time. I want to avoid tourists traps. Those places where they take your money and you do not even get what you pay for. Any good and safe places where to camp out?

you should go to the polynesian culture center.

but that depends on which part of hawaii you're going to (one of the islands)
i'm only familiar with oahu.
if you're going to the big island, i think what's good there is the volcano sites.

This was great information (since I am going with him) and we are staying on Maui.

When I went to Hawaii I stayed on Oahu and took a day trip to Kauai.  That was beautiful.  I'd love to go back.  I didn't get to a luau and I'd love to go whale watching and/or swim with the dolphins.  8)
