Sleep Study
« on: April 12, 2015, 04:56:28 pm »
I am seeing a sleep doctor soon and may undergo a sleep study.  Have any of you ever done that, and what was your experience?

I've done a sleep study.  It was an outrageous experience.  You're expected to spend the night in an unfamiliar room and an unfamiliar bed.  They taped a lot of different wires and junk on me and expected me to be comfortable enough to sleep.  My issue was insomnia in the first place so I just laid there waiting.  If you can't sleep...they can't get an accurate read on your sleep activity.  I finally asked if I could have the TV on.  The movie that was playing was SILENCE OF THE LAMBS so I managed to find the remote and turn it off.

Eventually I fell asleep and they were able to monitor my sleep for an hour.  Then they woke me up and sent me home.  They learned that I stopped breathing 20 times during that hour so I eventually had a CPAP prescription.

Since then, I've had a tonsillectomy and I've learn that enough B complex can solve the breathing problem so I no longer use a CPAP machine.

Have a great day!

I have had several of them. One day while driving to a customers location I went through a construction zone and before I knew what happened, I woke up with an airbag in my face. So they sent me for my first sleep study and determined after a couple of hours that I had sleep apnea and set me up with a CPAP machine. I had a couple more studies over the last 15 years and changed machines twice.

The study itself is no big deal (at least not for me), they wired me up and I fell asleep in a few minutes and woke up after a good nights sleep and went home. Like I said, no big deal.

I did a sleep study when I was in high school. It was weird because you sleeping in a room with a camera on u although u can't see it. My room room looked like any other bedroom, nice bed , TV, night stand and a door that you could close. The sleep study is how I found out that I stopped breathing while I slept.

I am very glad to read what sherryinutah wrote about the B complex.  I am going to try that as I'm quite sure I have sleep apnea but I'm not going to go thru the test.

The more I think about it, the less inclined I am to do the test.  I have a special bed at home because I have arthritis and can't bear to sleep on hard or even semi-hard mattresses.  I also can't see myself, a 72-year-old woman with false teeth (partial plate) and possibly other false body parts, trying to sleep on camera. :)  I am also diabetic and wake up every couple of hours to go to the bathroom, and I don't know if a sleep study would help that.  The bottom line, I guess, is that I think I would be too embarrassed.

I guess it comes down to whether you think being embarrassed is worse than dying. They are learning that sleep apnea is the cause of death in more cases than they ever realized. Even strong professional athletes are just failing to wake up the next morning because if it.

It would not work for me.  I don't sleep well in a strange place.  Would never fall asleep with a bunch of crap taped to me.  And I am guessing you would be limited to sleeping on your back which a lot of people don't do.  And to the above posted that was woke up and sent home...That would tick me off.  Why not just send you home in the morning?  Looks like that would even be dangerous because most people don't live next door to a sleep study center so there would be a good chance of falling asleep driving home.

I did one a year ago and it was a pleasant experience.  Very comfortable room and bed.  It showed that I was waking 60 times a night.  Now I use a CPAP and feel much better.  :)

When I was 15 they had to monitor my sleep. They had me stay up the night before, then they put me in a recliner (not a bed), and told me to sleep for an hour. Well, that didn't happen. I couldn't get comfortable and when I tried they told me to stop moving. I found it extremely frustrating. The minute I got home I crashed.
