Ever heard of putting your Christmas tree up on Christmas Eve?
« on: November 06, 2015, 02:54:53 am »
I had a lady tell me her family comes over and they have a big production of putting the tree up on Christmas EVE. I was like what is the point by then? Anyone else ever hear of this?

I have heard of it and it's cheaper too. I got a six foot live Noble Fir one year for ten bucks Christmas Eve. Not just to save money, but we were out of town before then and we left it up until New Years Day, so it was still nice and made the house smell like Christmas.

One year we were really busy and did that, usually we don't though.

I've done this before. It's a magical thing when you see it go up before Christmas day. All of sudden everything changes.

When I was a real little kid that's what my parents did to help foster my belief in Santa I guess.  And it did.  For now I'm a senior and I still believe Santas.  They are real. However, they come in all shapes, sizes, genders and fashion every single day of the year and can be found globally.

My mother said that was how it was done when she was a kid (early 50's) and then the tree stayed up till Jan 6 (The feast of the Epiphany or Three Kings Day). Basically the 12 Days of Christmas.

When I was a kid we would put the tree up about 2 weeks before (and most of the people in the area who celebrated Christmas) and they stayed up thru New years at least.  When we moved South I was shocked that people put trees up on Thanksgiving Day (and took them down the day after Christmas).

Yes I did, and some people in my area still do it. It's a tradition that goes back to the first settlers in this area, back in the early 1700s.

I don't even decorate anymore or have a tree. I miss it but I hate the time to decorate and for the few days or weeks the tree would be up. I also hate the mess after I take down the decorations. One year my husband didn't take the tree out until February even though I kept nagging him about it! The mess from the needles when trying to get it out the door was horrendous! Needless to say, I don't do decorating anymore, especially a tree.

It would be nice to get an artificial, already decorated tree, but I can't afford one because they're so expensive.

It is a very old tradition.  They had the tree up for only a night or two.  Remember they also use to put real candles on them before the lights we use now.   Houses use to be a lot smaller than now, so I guess maybe they just did not have the room to leave it up longer.  I have a lot of friends and relatives who put up the Christmas decorations on Thanksgiving weekend.   When my Mother In Law was in a nursing home after a surgery, we got her a tree about one foot high (artificial was all they allowed) decorated it up.  Now that is the only thing she puts out every year, we gave away or sold all of her other decorations, she loves having just the small tree on a coffee table.  Since it is artificial there is no needle mess.

I knew a family who did that also. I think it comes from long ago when people used to only have trees that they cut tthemselves and they did not keep them up long because they dried out. It does seem pointless but to each their own.

I think putting up the tree on Christmas Eve is more of an old-fashioned family tradition than a more modern-day approach.  Most people I know don't do that any more but many years ago (before artificial trees) it was the "norm" because of course a live tree dried out quickly so that was I think the reason.

Yes, a lot of people use to do this.  And leave it up til after New Year's Day.  Use to people didn't put it up 2 months before Christmas.
