sending cash in the postal mail
« on: August 12, 2016, 08:46:03 am »
I would never do such a thing.
I wonder how many people do.
"survey says..."
Someone from N.C. sent me some [$30] cash and I got it yesterday.
Do the majority of people not think that someone might steal it?

No, I wouldn't be too afraid of people stealing any cash that I may send by mail.... First of all, the person would have to somehow screen the millions of envelopes that get sent everyday to determine the few that contain cash. Also, when you consider the number of items sent through the mail, the amount that a crook could get from cash vs. pawning stolen items from the mail, they'd get much more money from the items than from cash (most people wouldn't send hundreds of dollars in cash thru the mail, yet do send tablets, cell phones, etc. (like E-bay sellers) thru the mail that are worth those hundreds of dollars).

I wouldn't worry about it. Fold up a piece of paper to hide it if you have a cheap envelope and are really worried about it. The main worry I would have about sending cash in the mail is that the other person could claim they never received and you really have no way of verifying it. With a check you can see when they cash it.

When I was a child ( a long, long time ago) I would get cash in the mail from relatives for my birthday.  Never seemed to be a problem.  Now a days with gift cards I tend to send those to my young relatives for birthdays, Christmas, etc.  Can always get a visa gift card if you don't know the specific store they would like.   But I would still be comfortable sending cash in a card.

You have to be careful about gift cards too. The postal worked who used to deliver my route just got charged with the crime of stealing gift cards from the mail. She ripped off two from me - I mailed them but the people I sent them to never got them. Luckily they were only worth $5 so it was no big deal.

I personally would never send cash in the mail. My sister works in the sorting facility at the post office and tells me plenty of horror stories about things that get wrecked in the machines. Not that I am worried about it being "stolen," but if something happens to the envelope, no way to track who it belongs to, a lot like gift cards.

I don't worry too much about sending a birthday card with cash through the mail.

I do not send cash in the mail. it is is always a gift card of a check.  So many of the letters and mostly  cards do just  seem to get lost in the mail.  I don't want to say the mail carriers or others working the  mail department are dishonest, but  just seems  like too much of it  does not get to those it was intended for.

I never send cash.  I usually send a card and inform them that I added them as bill payer in my online banking and they will should receive a check from the bank.  This is easier than and I don't have to pay for a stop payment if the check never reaches them.  The bank picks up the tab!!!!

I do think that someone would steal if they knew cash was in the envelope. That's sad.
