I rent,  but I would like to own. I'm saving as much money as possible, and I hope to have my own place in the next year or so.

I own my house used my inheritance to purchase my mother's house when she passed.  We too want a bigger house although some people would not understand that but its two grown sons and me and we need some space of our own with maybe an office and work out room in between everyone's bedroom.  I need a pool to try and work out in due to my health issues.  We shall see what God has in store.

I own my home free and clear now but about as soon as you pay off a mortgage the house seems to start needing about everything.  Upkeep can nickle and dime you to death and then sometimes you run into an expense that is "over the top."  As I am aging, I am not certain what my best option is as far as keeping my home, renting an apartment, buying a condo, or what.  I am starting to look at all options as I am not sure that staying in my house over the long term is my best decision.

I now rent and have a roommate. I save quite a bit by splitting utilities. The downside is privacy.

Here's how I purchased my 5 bedroom home paid in full at 32 years old:

1.I read Rich Dad Poor Dad and Write it Down Make it Happen.
2.I studied my finances to see where I was spending unnecessary money that could be saved.
3.As a result of step 2, I moved to a tiny apartment for 3 years and saved the difference among other lifestyle changes- which for some of you may include using your income taxes to buy a cash car you might not want to deduct the car note from your monthly expenses.  I know these changes are uncomfortable, but sacrifice now to thrive later.
4.In addition to saving as much as possible, I created more streams of income (by selling stuff on ebay, requesting child support from my ex husband, writing and selling ebooks, researching available local resources, and so on). One of the resources I found was a home buying grant class that awarded me $10K that I unfortunately couldn't use bc it was only applicable to homes purchased through the bank and not paid in full : (  but it was a great learning experience.
5.I searched homes in my desired town to learn what I could afford to determine my savings goal.
6.When the time came to buy I was still $2K short, I borrowed this from my baby sister. You may also contact churches and assistance organizations if you're not comfortable borrowing from friends and family.

Now, less than 2 years later, I'm in the process of upgrading to a better home.  I continued saving, including depositing what I use to spend on rent.  2 years from now I plan to buy my first set of real estate income- wish me luck!

Hope this helps someone!

We own a condo, which is a nice size because it is one of the older developments in our community and therefore the rooms are much larger then you will find in the newer developments;  we have patio with storage on the patio so it works for us.
