I stop and get a cup of ice. Then I put a little ice in my mouth to melt slowly every now and then to keep myself awake if I don't have anyone to talk to.

I also put on an oldies channel and sing oldies. You cannot fall asleep doing that!

Is there any type of beverage that is better for driving to help you stay awake and alert without needing to go to rest stops too often?
If there's a problem staying awake and alert, maybe you shouldn't be driving at all.  Get a good night's rest, then stretch for about 10 - 15 minutes and then you can get behind the wheel.

If you need any beverage at all, use regular, plain water and keep yourself well hydrated..

So now if you are saying something like,' well wait a minute.  I have to drive, I have to be at such and such a place by a certain time.'  That's fine, I get it. Try public transportation or maybe a friend.

... but you will have to stop for bathroom breaks no matter what you drink.

Unless you wear an adult diaper.   :-[

It won't keep you from having to relieve yourself, but anything with caffeine should do the trick - unless you are somehow immune to its effects.  Personally, I do not drink coffee or tea and I never drink caffeinated pop - have been off of it since my college days.  So a few months ago I was making about a 3 or 4 hour drive home with my family in the evening and I was dead tired.  Rather than risk it, I stopped at a convenience store and bought a bottle of Mountain Dew (that was my drink of choice in high school).  It absolutely did the trick!  Wide awake for the entire drive home. But a lot of that effect was due to my general limited caffeine intake otehrwise.  If you are already a coffee or Pepsi/Coke drinker, your experience may vary.

But be careful!  There was a teen in SC who recently died after drinking several caffeine drinks over the course of a few hours.  I think he had a coffee, a large soda, and an energy drink. A LOT of caffeine, for sure, but deadly?

Green Tea, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and any drink with caffeine should work.

Mountain Dew was also my drink of choice growing up. In the glass bottle was the best it kept me awake through school and later college. I can't even look at it now or my HBP will react. Did not hear of this unfortunate tragedy. I guess people respond differently to different things. My husband drinks 2-3 pots of coffee every morning and then he can actually go back to sleep. I can get lethal amounts of morphine and it do nothing for pain due to my receptors not responding to it. If I'm in the ER they start out on Dilaudid and go on to Fentanyl if need be.

None.  If you're getting drowsy, pull over at a rest stop and take a rest instead.

So I've been thinking after reading the question and thought about it.  I can't come up with anything that isn't a beverage.  I've come up with watermelon chunks.... cause if your spitting seeds you need to stay alert.. and your hydrating.  And celery.  It's loaded with water.  Eventually you would have to make some pitstops though.

The OP asked for A TYPE OF BEVERAGE.  So why would you try to think of something that is not a beverage.

I agree with the second poster.  This is a stupid question.  Drink something with caffeine in it.  Heck drink a 6 pack of red bull.

You could always get some sleep before a road trip.  If you are a truck driver trying to drive 48 hours without stopping - do us all a favor and get off the road.  Nobody needs to die because you don't want to take a sleep break.

And there will be more die.  And unfortunately their family will sue the drink maker company.  If you are stupid then you deserve to die.  I have seen many people suck on them energy drinks all day.  Guzzles 5-6 of the huge cans a day.  Any idiot should know that much caffeine can kill you.  Plus mix it with their crushed pill of choice and it is a deadly mixture for sure.

Anything but coffee, caffeinated tea, soda, and alcohol. Coffee and certain teas contain caffeine so they act as a diuretic to stimulate your kidneys to make trips to the restroom. Water is the safer alternative. Why not put on some music like the radio to keep you company?
