Anxiety disorders
« on: January 02, 2018, 02:02:54 pm »
I've had a moderate to severe anxiety disorder my whole life. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on how to live with anxiety and get past such thoughts/feelings. I currently take 4 meds for it. Some days, they work well. Some days, I'm a nervous wreck, but they say mental health is a roller coaster, so I assume that's consistent with what others experience.

Any hobbies/interests that can help with anxiety? I feel like if I were more social, some of the anxiety would go away, but I just generally don't like being around people much beyond my job (being painfully honest here). I love animals -- love my cats -- and also like relaxing with some tv. I've tried doing some meditative tapes I've found on youtube, but they don't help much in my opinion. Therapy hasn't helped at all.

Anyone use "alternative medicine" for anxiety? Marijuana? I've tried it and it doesn't do much of anything for me.

I feel like I'm a compulsive worrier and it's always something. It's the primary reason my marriage ended. My ex-husband said he thought I was "mentally unstable" and was "sick of my ---t." The check engine light is on on my car right now. It's all I presently think about, though hopefully I'll get a little break tonight if I make it home safe and can crash in front of the tv with some good food.

I don't have any mental problems but I agree with you about being around people. People get on my nerves. The more I am around people the more I like my pets.

Heehee ... I feel the same about my pets. They love you unconditionally and are hilarious. People ... ehhh ... don't get me started, but I nonetheless am attempting to be more social. :)

Very sad to read your disability. I had a classmate when I was a teenager, she had anxiety disorders I am now embarrassed that I avoided her when I seen her because it was troubling to me when I thought she was crazy and not active listening or helping. I chose not to be a friend, and that was wrong, and missed out on a friend, we all need friends. Sorry don't know if diets, exercise, or try to be sociable even if you got to put in effort would help, try a psychiatrist not a counselor. Maybe you need to surround your self with animals if you can afford it.

I'm sorry for your condition, I don't know what to tell you that would make it better. I've never know no one with that disorder. Wish you well.

Hello! :D :)

All my life I never have much friends just a freind or two, nonetheless I think it is important to have someone other than an animal in your life. I would suggest keeping a diary online or offline and writing down your feelings that may make you feel better. Additionally I would suggest using social media and starting a group to help you get the support that you need. Furthermore I would suggest outlets like music, or a walk in a park as mediation it always helped me. :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:

Exercise (like walking or yoga) and have to tried mindfulness apps. I know they help some people push bad thoughts away.

I just started going to a church for moral and spiritual support. It took everything I had to go there. But after a lot of research they seem like a very welcoming group. Honestly my anxiety manifests in very different ways from physical to mental. Physcially I'll either get up and pace or just sleep. I do have a stationary bike that seems to help with nervous energy. Mentally, I'm like you, I'm a worrier. I know that eventually it goes away however. I can be fine for the longest time mentally then be hit by something and do nothing but worry, but it passes. As hard as it might be for you, which it has been hard for me to leave the house due to a past trauma, I think would be worth it to put in the effort in place where you feel safe. For me that's church.

Have you tried keeping your head down and as still as possible meaning the only movements you make with your head are for relaxing uncomfortable sections?

Why do so many take the drug route to deal with problems  ? I've never known anyone who uses(used drugs )for life problems and it all worked out for the good.Deal with your problems w/o drugs because the drugs you take do not fix anything.

Some people can be toxic...very toxic to your health! Avoid them.
Smoking, alcohol use or some other drugs are not going to solve any problems.
Examine your life: What is causing your anxieties and fears?
Avoid those situations that are causing all your problems.
Make a plan: Center your activities around things that make you happy.
    Plan for a healthier you!

Interesting perspectives from everyone!! I wouldn’t even say there’s anything specific I worry about. I would just say I worry in general. Currently at a car dealership waiting on my car, which has the check engine light on. I’m a nervous wreck about that, though once that gets fixed, there will be something else I’ll be worrying about. I don’t use the term disability to describe it because that’s such a serious word. I still work and attempt to have an active social life. It’s just that persistent, constant worrying is always in the back of my mind.

I personally exercise to help relieve it.  My sister was diagnosed with a severe case of acute anxiety and her therapist recommended "adult" colouring books.  She finds that it helps her immensely.

I've done adult coloring books before, but haven't really stuck with it. Exercise is another thing I should be doing but just don't get around to it. Both are good ideas for me. :)
