MLK Day
« on: January 21, 2019, 07:37:45 am »
Do you have the day? Are you doing anything to honor Dr. MLK? What do you think about having this day off?

I think it is very good for all of us to take a moment and remember what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. did for civil rights in this country.  I work in an industry that does not recognize the holiday, but I still can pause an remember a great man.

Most places do not recognize this as a holiday.  I do not agree with shutting the country down for all these stupid holidays.
And yes, I think it is stupid to shut the country down for all these people's birthday or this or that.  You want to honor them then that is fine - honor them.  But I do not agree with shutting down the mail, banks, and everything else.

Heck most places do not even close for Christmas anymore.

When I hear people say they "work from home" I am always curious as to what they do.  If they have a real job or do surveys and call that a job.  I talked to a woman at the vet who said oh she worked from home.  No, she draws a check off the government which pays her bills.  She does surveys for extra spending money.  And she tells people she works from home.

If people will take the bait she refers them and tries to get them to join under her then she makes money off them as a referral.  But without the government check she would not be able to make it.

I know another woman who "works from HER home" but she works for an insurance company and if you ask he where she works she does not say "I work from home" she says the name of the insurance company.  And unless the conversation really progresses you do not know she works from her house.

Martin Luther King Jr day is a paid holiday at my work.  It took over Easter as a paid holiday.

Since I work at a 24/7 group home, staff does work today.

MLK was a great man in our country's history and his works are to be appreciated and honored.  I personally do not do anything special to honor the day.  It is work as usual.

I appreciate having the day off.  It's too cold to go out anyway.  Stay warm and safe everybody.

I don't have the day off but I will take a moment to remember this most influential civil rights leader and all his achievements.

No day off since retired. I see no problem with closing institutions to celebrate someone or something. Sometimes it actually makes people think about the people they're celebrating.

I have great respect for Martin Luther King. The things I heard about him on the radio today make me want to read his biography. He was a highly intelligent and educated man. Remarkably so.  :star:

I always enjoyed having days off for whatever reason when I was working and when I was going to school.

I never worked any where that this was a paid day off.  I don't even know that I have ever worked any where that this was a day off. lol.  I remember a job I worked on a while back they took Easter off the paid holidays.  A lot of people were really upset about that. It does seem like they replaced it with some other day but I do not remember what.

I did not even think of it until  I went by the bank as I needed to deposit a check  what day it was. most  days just blend together anymore. And until some thing reminds me it is a holiday I really just blow it. No Christmas is one  I don't. It is the birth of Christ and Easter I never  forget because he rose.  Those  two besides the 4th. of July and Memorial day are the only true holidays for me.

I did have MLK day off. It was bitter cold today, so I did not attend the parade or visit his statute. I think this day should be one that we all sit back and think about. Not just white and black, but with all that is going on like the Govt Shutdown, the wall, people not working, people saying hurtful thing about others....we all need to step back and think about all of this. Hate causes more Hate. Definitely not Making America Great Again.
