Had one in the past so yes I know how to use it.  The sound doesn't scare me but when the kids were younger and dropped things that they should not yes it scared me.

However, I don't understand why they're a thing in the first place. Grinding up solids to wash down the drain is a terrible idea plumbingwise.
If they're just meant to grind up things that already accidentally went down the drain, okay. But I've seen people scrape their dinner plates off into the sink and flip the switch?? I don't get it.

Yes to both. I have one and use it almost everyday. When we had our house built I was sure that I wanted one in my kitchen.

What amazes me is that people don't think about running water while the garbage disposal is running. You can ruin it if you don't and depending on what model you have getting it fixed could be expensive.

Yes, yes and no. But it would scare my grand daughter. She is an infant and loud noises are not happy sounds to her. I have personally never had a garbage disposal myself. I just don't think I would have a use for one. We have a horse and a goat that eat most of our produce scraps.
