I didn't know a parlor was a living room. Thanks for clueing me in on that. I always thought it was a sort of an entryroom in old houses where you put your boots and umbrellas as you enter the house.

That is called a mud room now lol

We only had a living room when I was growing up; but as an adult when I purchase my own home I had a family room/den/parlor I have heard it called all three.

We had a living room.  We never played in there.  That room was for company.

We have always had a living room but I guess it depends on the generation.

Growing up, we lived in homes that hada parlor, another room we used to TV and sitting, and a kitchen. The parlor was rarely used. It was just the first room when you came in the front door and had the "best" furniture in it. The other room had a lounge chair and a "day" bed plus a chair.  The lounge chair was one piece and took up a lot of room. The head and back were curved downward, then a "valley" where your butt was situated and a light curve upward to the leg and foot and level but above the butt part. I can't exactly explain it, but in those days, it must have been very expensive.

I've always considered the term "parlor" rather old fashioned and I am no spring chicken.  We always referred to the living room.  Even my parents referred to the living room. I figured the term "parlor" might be confined to certain parts of the country or even somewhere like England perhaps.

Always was a living room, growing up a living room was all we had. But I have a living room and no one goes in there because we have a family room.

I always thought that they were 2 separate rooms.  Only mansions had parlors.  My impression was that it was a greeting room for unexpected company.

When I was a kid in Chicago in the 1960s and 1970s, my mom called it the living room. Since my now house doesn't have a separate living room and den, we call our one big room a great room (still sometimes living room).  My aunt in Maryland still has a never-used parlor and a very-much-used den, though!  :peace:

I was born in the 1980s, so I am not accustomed to referring to the living room as a "parlor". I will say, however, the variety of terms used to describe the same item (which varies with whatever generation you were born in, country you are from, etc.) are astounding.

It was always a Living Room at our House too. We had a Fireplace and in the Winter My Daddy would always have it going. My Sister and I would always sit next to the Fireplace and watch Cartoons and drink Hot Chocolate.
