WASHINGTON — The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court late Thursday to overturn the Affordable Care Act — a move that, if successful, would bring a permanent end to the health insurance program popularly known as Obamacare and wipe out coverage for as many as 23 million Americans.

In an 82-page brief submitted an hour before a midnight deadline, the administration joined Republican officials in Texas and 17 other states in arguing that in 2017, Congress, then controlled by Republicans, had rendered the law unconstitutional when it zeroed out the tax penalty for not buying insurance — the so-called individual mandate.

The administration’s argument, coming in the thick of an election season — as well as a pandemic that has devastated the economy and left millions of unemployed Americans without health coverage — is sure to reignite Washington’s bitter political debate over health care.


“President Trump and the Republicans’ campaign to rip away the protections and benefits of the Affordable Care Act in the middle of the coronavirus crisis is an act of unfathomable cruelty,” Ms. Pelosi said in a statement late Thursday night, after the administration’s brief was filed.

“If President Trump gets his way,” she added, “130 million Americans with pre-existing conditions will lose the A.C.A.’s lifesaving protections and 23 million Americans will lose their health coverage entirely.”

You can't afford insurance so here let me fine you a few thousand while we give every free loader than crawls across the boarder insurance for free. As well as the baby machines who making a living off welfare.

When obamercare went in to effect millions of people lost insurance because they could no longer afford it.  And they did not qualify for the welfare insurance. But of course you don't want to talk about that.

I totally agree with you.  He doesn't care about the average citizen.  He only cares about his demographic - white, rich, and republican.  He's never had to worry about money or "making it" in this world.  It's just a shame.

They do not want "medicare for all" that is what they say but it does not mean what you think it does. Millions of people lost insurance when obamercare was shoved down everybody's throat. Tons of people were fined for not having insurance. They did not qualify for the freebie insurance and could in no way afford any insurance available. Nothing is free. People cannot be so stupid as to think it is.  There was one country (I can not remember which) I talked to a woman online and she was like oh we have free medical.  Well yeah I pay half my income which goes for medical but it is free if I go to the doctor.  Kind of have to walk away. Some people are too stupid to converse with.  The only people who get it free are the dead beats who do not work. But somebody is paying for it.

I had Obamacare for myself and spouse while i worked and paid a fair premium.

To have gotten HI b4 Obamacare the premiums were unaffordable.TY President Obama.You should show Hump how to handle this virus b4 he wipes out MAGA....LOL

Oh yeah, Obamacare is great. I had a $20 copay for a doctor's appointment and a $5 copay for a prescription before Obamacare. Now I pay the same premium, but instead of a copay, I have a $6500 deductible. I literally can't afford to go to the doctor now, with or without health insurance.
