Porch Pirates
« on: July 18, 2020, 08:41:12 am »
Has anyone ever had to deal with porch pirates? I see stories on the news all the time, but never had an issue until just recently. An Amazon package was stolen from our front porch yesterday sometime between 10:00 and 1:00. We don't have one of those video/security doorbells, but I am seriously considering getting one now.

It was only a $7.50 plastic bowl, thankfully, but it is the principle of the thing. I am a little upset with the post office because I was home at the time it was apparently delivered, but the carrier never rang the doorbell or knocked. The tracking number says that it was delivered at 10:04 a.m. and my wife got the mail around lunchtime.

For whatever reason, there was a delay between the time it was delivered and the time I got my pop-up text notice that is automatically set up with Amazon. I got a text alert at 1:49 p.m. that the item was delivered. So I immediately upon getting the text message went out front to grab and inspect my new bowl - only to find nothing there!

When I went to the post office about an hour ago, after doing some checking in back, the employee told me that the item was delivered as indicated and that they have a GPS signal in their tracking device that pinpoints the exact location of where an item was left - so they can tell if it was delivered to a back door or left with a neighbor, etc.

Really steamed right now! I'm not sure if I will be able to get a replacement or a refund or nothing, but I am going through the steps posted on Amazon to see. Thankfully, the birthday gift for my wife, which was part of the same order, was shipped and received separately a few days ago.

How infuriating!  The nerve of people to steal from others.  So far, Amazon or whatever merchant we've used, have put our packages in the back instead of on the front step which is visible from the street.  I think that really helps for us.

That’s terrible. I have to agree the post office, fedex, UPS, and Amazon never ring the bell.  I have an L shaped ranch home and we live in the family room. My dogs will alert me someone is walking up the driveway so I look out the window to see them either put or throw the package on the porch.  Ringing the doorbell never crossed their minds.  I hope you can either get your money back or a replacement free

We have a Ring Doorbell and a loud dog too, so have not lost any of the many shipments I get, but I have often wondered if Amazon replaces them if they do get stolen.

Post Office once misdelivered a huge box to a neighbor of mine.  After a visit to the branch PO, the manager figured out from the GPS what address it was misdelivered to, and I went after it!  It had been opened, but was complete and the neighbor said he never looked at the addressee, thought perhaps his wife ordered something.  Please check that avenue, delivered to a closely numbered address is possible!

I have been fortunate so far but have been ordering more things online because of quarantine - let us know how you make out with amazon and whether they replace it or not.

I haven't personally had any issue. I know there was a streak of them going on around town, but luckily it didn't affect my things.

What a shame, UGetPaid! But like you said, at least it was only a $7.50 bowl. But the nerve of some people! I think most of us, if not all, would never dream of just going up to someone's porch or front door and just taking what they bought with their hard-earned money. Well, I guess it takes all kinds. But I think Fedex, UPS, and USPS ought to make it a matter of procedure to ring the doorbell or knock on the door when a package is delivered, even if it's just to let you know it's there before they walk back to their truck, especially with porch pirates on the prowl!  :peace:

Wow, that's messed up. I am lucky to live up a long lane on the side of a mt. so it is unlikely anything would get stolen from us. However it is frustrating that neither the UPS or USPS ever ring the door bell or knock. It usually just get a text saying it is delivered. It would be really nice if they at least tried to let me know they delivered something. Problem is that smaller stuff is left in our mailbox at the end of the lane and could be easily taken until one of us goes after the mail.

It really does not matter what was stolen or how much it cost. It is yours and nobody has the right to take it. I would start with looking at the delivery method. Who delivered it? Go to them and question the driver as to where they left it. And just because the package was supposedly scanned and said it was left doesn't mean it was. Just sayin'.  I am having a lot of issues with Fedex right now. They want to toss packages out at the road in front of the house because they are too lazy to come to the door.  Anyway,  I do not live in an area where it is likely that would happen. You can't see the doors from the road well enough to tell their is a package.  I would likely look at a neighbor first if something disappeared but I really don't think they would take anything. And you have no idea who all has cameras and whether I did or not I would act like I did. Hopefully you can get your stuff replaced.

They do not have to ring the doorbell. A lot of people do not know that. Use to I think they knocked and waited for an answer and only left outside if no one came to the door.  They are so over loaded with deliveries right now you are lucky to get it at all. :(   When you have 800 to 1000 packages to deliver - you drop the package as quickly as possible and go on to the next one.

It amazes me at how many people make that claim. I always look at envelopes or packages delivered to my house to see who it is from and who it is addressed to.  I had a UPS coming once, not long ago, and he left the wrong package at my house. I caught him before he left. I knew it was not the right size for what I ordered.

A lot of them do. Just a quick knock most likely will not be heard. They have a ton of work to do and do not have time to wait on you to come to the door. Most people don't answer the door anyway. I have even seen a huge convo on here people screaming don't knock on my door and don't bother me. So there is no way for them to win. I actually have something coming today. Hopefully I will be back home from church before it is delivered.

So that is happening every where. I have complained multiple times about Fedex being in my mailbox.  I looked for 30 minutes for a package delivered on a Sunday a while back. Finally after calling the 800 number they told me to look in the mailbox. I think that driver was fired.
