Cancel Culture hits the Scrabble Boards
« on: February 27, 2021, 11:34:22 pm »
As I had mentioned in a reply to another poster, I am a professional Scrabble player who plays for money in NASPA tournaments.  Unfortunately due to Covid we have not been able to get together and have any tourneys for a long time, hopefully this summer, so a poor alternative is to play online.  I was playing one of my friends online the other day and he told me that a lot of words are being canceled >:( I haven't seen the list yet but in Adult Tournament Scrabble curse words, slang, and slurs have always been allowed because they are just words to make points we don't usually think or worry about the meaning of them, as a matter of fact it is not necessary to know the meanings but it can help.  It is hard enough to learn the thousands of words you need to know to help you be a better player now we have to unlearn words, what a joke :bad: :bad: :bad: If you don't unlearn these words and use them you can be challenged off and it could cost you a game.  Right now we can still use them online on the site I play on but who knows for how long? Maybe they will reconsider when we start playing live again and people start complaining  8)

You can't be cancelled if you don't let it happen. Seriously people need to fight back the ones that others are trying to cancel. This stuff is just getting repetitive . A small little group of people trying to cancel eveyone they don't like just seems silly to me

Cancel Culture is a form of racism to me, and they are behaving like isis, who destroyed religious buildings and western cultures..

What a bummer, bad enough you don't get to play.  Someone seems to have to much time on their hands if they are trying to cancel words.

I will definitely fight back. Just yesterday I was looking at an article where certain celebrities actually didn't have their careers affected by cancel culture. It just reinforces this idea of mine that people think they have more power than they actually have to affect the livelihoods of those that have opinions or say things that other don't agree with.
"Let me ask you something. If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule?"

I didn't know that there are professional scrabble players with competitions to enter in. Sounds cool and is a unique skillset.

I am impressed by the fact that you play competition Scrabble. We play Scrabble all the time. I had no idea that was happening with the word situation and how it is hindering your progress as a champion.

We just play on the premise that if it's in the dictionary, it's a viable word to use. I'm totally on your side and let's hope they come to their senses again for your sake. Where do I register my complaint for you fjaz1?

These cancel culture nut jobs are just getting started. Today I heard on the news that some Dr. Seus books will no longer be printed because they don't fit in with the times. I agree with king4cash, these left wing bigots are like isis and need to be dealt with or we'll be living in a commie pigsty like China or San Fran freako.

Learned something new!  We often play, never knew there were championships.  Good luck when you can play again, hope you are a big winner.  I think it’s totally ridiculous to have to unlearn words.  This is getting totally ridiculous.  If there is anything we can do to stop it, please let us know.

I heard yesterday from a friend that soon shoes will not be designated as men's or women's!  Also clothes.

We are completely fed up with this insanity. I have no idea why we are falling into line with all the nonsense. On the other hand what in the world are the sane people in this world supposed to do when the haters are "canceling" everything.
