You know anything about cats
« on: March 29, 2021, 09:23:24 am »
We have a cat she is about two refuses to go outside, doesn't like kids, and runs from everyone except me, and terrified of my husband. She has eaten all the kid's hampsters .my 11-year-old granddaughter brought her here and now she wants her to go. My thought is she is only doing what a cat is supposed to do and she loves me and comes right to me but the kid that brought her here wants me to get rid of her. How do I teach my kids you can't get rid of an animal just because you want another one. Any thoughts? I should mention the main reason we let them have the cats is that we live near woods and had a lot of mice. Please no critics! I know I'm the adult and have the final say but curious has to other opinions?

Maybe the cat could become an outside cat.  I sound like it is somewhat antisocial. It would take care of the critters outside for you.

Your cat has to get used to the people around her. I wouldn't get rid of her but just be patient and train her on what you want her to do. Cats are pretty smart and they listen. I have a cat myself and I was frustrated with him when I first got him but realized that their behavior  can be due to the new environment or stress..

You should go over facts about cats so they can understand her behavior more. Over time it will get better.

You need to educate the cat.  Do research on how to teach her how to socialize with people.  Is your cat and adult or still a Kitten?  Cats and animals in general need to get accustom to their environment.  If the cat is a rescued might be that it was tormented where it was at before and needs to learn that is not going to be the same now.

My daughter adopted a kitten from PetSmart and it took her about a week to accustom herself to us and the dog, now she is a chill cat.

How long have you had her?  She might have been abused by a man and that’s why she’s afraid of your husband.  Maybe she was accidentally hurt by kids playing too rough with her and that’s why she afraid of your grandkids.  She might be an indoor cat and doesn’t want to go out.  I have many cats and I can leave the door open for a few minutes any of them can walk by, but they never leave the house.  I hope you don’t get rid of her, please don’t make her a throw a way pet.  Give her time and she just might surprise you.  Years ago I adopted a cat brought her home and honestly for 3 yes 3 months she lived under our bed.  I put a litter box in our bathroom and food and water.  She would come out when we weren’t there or asleep.  Eventually she came out and in time became  a very affectionate cat.  Good luck and keep us posted.

I'd like to know why you got the cat in the first place. Whose idea was it?

Make some rules for everyone and stick by them. I alternately love and hate the cat we have now, but I couldn't stand getting rid of her just because I don't like what she does sometimes. We all have personalities and some are not so pleasant. She sometimes has a hard time liking me.

Anyway, your cat could actually, and eventually, be a teaching experience for the whole family.

Yes, really.  :star:

My cat is a pain too. He does what he wants to do doesn't want me to hold him long. I actually get mad with my cat and won't interact for days except for litter box changing and food.

A few months ago my cat bit me hard 3 times in 2 weeks.  I started to call her Trump.  Read online that when a cat does that it's not because she doesn't like you but wants attention. Trump doest bite me anymore. She runs when grandkids come and likes to be inside. I keep her in they're safer inside.

Cats are all different.  They can all be trained/retrained.

Sounds like your cat is experiencing some type of stress.  They do make products for stress.  Maybe you should look into these products if you want to keep her.  My cat is 12 years old and she only wants to be around me.  If someone comes to the house she hides under the bed or couch.  She is an indoor cat only.
