Cicadas

Supposedly they are coming out soon, depending on where you are in the country....I haven't really seen them, but was wondering if anyone else has or what your experience has been with them. I have heard that they are harmless, but just a nuisance...

I am in Akron, OH. They are loud, pretty harmless, and just a noise nuisance to me. With all the news coverage, I worry it will be worse than before but from what I remember they were LOUD the last time (constant 'lawnmower' type sound). Glad it only happens once in a while.

When our son was going to Northwestern (in Chicago) we visited him one summer when they were out and it was quite amazing. You can hear them long before you see them.

There is a very intimidating bee called a cicada killer that usually comes out when the weather is hot...July/August.They build their homes in the dirt and on golf course sand traps.A very pretty bee and a swift reckless flyer.They go after the cicadas but i wouldnt mess with them.

Haven't seem them but will be listening because I hear they are quite noisy.

I think the Cicadas are already here, according to the news stations.

Different broods show up at different locations depending on the year. I think they came out about four years ago back in my home town in eastern Ohio. I was back there briefly in the height of the swarm and it was amazing how loud and aggressive they were. Not "dangerous" or "damaging" aggressive, just "all over the place" aggressive. Several would fly by and land ON me as I walked across the back yard. And they were loud as all get-out... sounded almost like non-stop phaser blasts from Star Trek TOS!


That same year, we had none at all here in northern Ohio on the Lake - just 130 miles or so away.


I remember them coming out back home when I was a kid and I was always afraid of the exoskeletons they leave behind on tree trunks when they mature.
