Dying AC
« on: June 06, 2021, 05:54:53 am »
Well we had the AC service man come to check out the unit.  It’s on its last leg and won’t make this season.  I guess we can’t complain, it’s 26 years old.  It still works but not very well.  We are looking at a major heat wave this week.  So happy they can fit us in on Monday with a new unit.  There goes another $7000, but it’s worth it.  I have COPD and don’t know how I would survive in hot/humid weather.

Ours went out before last summer we were quoted 9k.  Didn't get it fixed.  We have ceiling fans  in every room (old house 1956) and I generally don't like ac but it was brutal last summer.  Can't even get a window ac because the windows we have aren't the type that open from the bottom up.  I have sliding windows or windows that crank open.  Looking into a portable ac and dehumidifier.

Just got in installed.  Four guys and it took 5 hours.  Saw them carry the old unit out and it’s nice and cool in the house.  Thankfully because it’s 96 outside.  I put the cats in our bedroom with a litter box (in bathroom) and ceiling fan on, door closed so no one can escape.  I had the dogs in family room with ceiling fan on and it wasn’t real bad, the fans kept the air flowing.

We had to put in a new unit a couple of months ago, but it was also about 22 or 23 years old, the heater went to.
We should be saving on heat and air since we have been working on the house and have reinsulated, gotten the thermal windows etc.  Also aboaut 18 months ago we had a new roof put on and went solar.

I feel for you on this point. I haven't even turned on the air conditioner where we're living yet. I run the furnace fan at night and it keeps it nice; so far. When it starts being a true midwestern summer, I'll have to turn it on.

The good thing about it is that we're caretaking this house, so if the unit has to be replaced, we won't be responsible for the cost.  :notworthy:

I know it is too hot to not have the AC working properly. My brother and I just bought a new one for our parents a new one, their house is just too hot. The one they have isn't working properly.

Ours went out Saturday and was 87 in the house but anything above that I would have been in a hotel.  It was repaired Monday and the house is now comfortable and I'm so thankful we didn't have to purchase a new unit.

We have not put our AC in the windows yet.  We will put the one in the Kitchen in first,  the fridge does not like the hot weather.  I have 10 feet ceiling and ceiling fans in most of the rooms.

We just bought a new Home, but have not moved in yet. Every time we turn the AC on, it freezes up.

That AC lasted twice as long as they usually last, that was a blessing.

It's definitely worth the price; it hasn't even reached the peak of the heat we're about to receive.

I purchased my Central Air Conditioner when I initially purchased my home.  It didn't even have a leg to stand own, that is why I had to do something and quick.

Be thankful you have $7000 to just get a brand new unit immediately. Most people would not be able to do that. :(
Good that you are able to afford it.  :D
