House plants which are safe around guinea pigs?
« on: March 31, 2026, 01:13:00 am »
Hi, I couldn't decide which area of the forum this should go under so I hope I chose the right one. Please can you recommend some guinea pig safe house plants? I will not be intentionally feeding these house plants to a guinea pig but I don't want there to be any risk to my piggies if a leaf accidentally fell in their cage or run. Thank you so much!

I was in the same spot recently and ended up getting a couple of houseplants from a place that shipped super fast and included simple care guides, which made things way easier for me. The variety helped me pick plants that actually fit my space and routine, and the prices were decent with the sales they run.

There are a few houseplants that are generally considered safe to have around guinea pigs, even if a leaf accidentally falls into their space. Some commonly mentioned pet-safe options include spider plants, Boston ferns, areca palms, and calathea. These are non-toxic and widely kept in homes with small animals.

That said, even with safe plants, it’s still a good idea not to let your guinea pigs actively chew on them too much, since houseplants aren’t part of their natural diet and could still cause mild digestive issues.

Also, be extra careful with common toxic plants like pothos, philodendron, monstera, aloe vera, and peace lilies - those should definitely be kept well out of reach.

If you want to be 100% safe, placing plants on higher shelves or in hanging pots is a great solution. :)
