Title: making money from your hobbies
Post by: singletonb on September 06, 2014, 08:07:50 pm
Is there anyone out there making money online selling their products that they have made?  I am thinking about doing that but am not sure if it is a good idea or cost me more to put it online that I would actually make.

I don't make money from any of my hobbies, I don't really have any hobbies.
But I do appreciate other's work.  I like to look through ETSY,  people are so arty & so creative there.  Lots of people seem to do real well there with their hobbies.   I think it is like 20 cents to put something up there for 3 months, so seems cheap enough to try out.  Good Luck.  :)

I do both crocheting and knitting. I tried putting some of the items I made up for sale on etsy.com but the only ones that actually sold were stuff that I had severely reduced the price on. It ended up costing me more than I made at the site to do this. Now I just make stuff for family and friends. I don't even try to sell anything anymore.

I think you have to check your cost (including the time you put in) against how much it will cost you to sell. Auction sites charge a small percentage I think but there are other sites where you may be able to list for free. Depending on what you are selling you may be able to find a small store or boutique in your area that you can sell your products wholesale to them and make your money right away. May be easier that was

My husband does woodworking for a hobby and has sold dog feeders that he made on ebay. He made a little bit of extra money doing it but I'm not sure if it was enough to compensate for all the time. After he paid ebay fees and postage I don't know if he made enough to warrent all the time he had in it.

I have a shop on Etsy. It has done well and is a great help in paying the bills. The cost is very low and I get a lot of views. The only problem that I have is finding enough time to make more things to stock my shop. But that all has to do with my bust schedule lately and time management. Good luck with whatever you find.

My hobby is the Internet and I make digital products for no cost and sell them online for an 85% profit after processor fees and automated delivery costs.

im thinking of the same thing & i do draw as a hobby + i've seen people on DA & FA (DevianART & Fur Affinity) selling art as adoptables, eggs, original characters, and even commissions (paying for them for artwork based on what you want). Most is through PayPal but some are through western union just depends on who & you got to be careful because of cons when dealing with such matters. As of how its done well i know of the western union way (& info is shared through messages) but never messed with that & PayPal i have bought stuff online before with it on ebay or amazon (it was a long time ago) for PC stuff but never used it to sell stuff. its best to type this question in the search on google.

I have a program for stationery and greeting cards. I make greeting cards for residents who are elderly and can't get out to the store. Some prefer my cards after they see the first one they buy from me. They are custom made, each one unique. I have requests for birthday, anniversary, get well, thank you and sympathy cards. I make both Christmas letters and cards. One of my neighbors and customers sends out 85 letters at Christmas. She cut down from 95.

Writing is my hobby.  I am so blessed to be able to make money online as a freelance writer.  When you do what you love, it doesn't even seem like work.

Thanks for all the responses.  I guess I can say that FC is one of my hobbies but I like to do other things also.  At this rate, I guess I will continue to do what I do for those I love.  Too much trouble to try to earn money from what I do.  I am not a writer and I know just enough about the internet to get by.  Thanks again.

Costs are minimal when it comes to selling online as compared to opening up your own storefront and having all those overhead costs. There's really no comparison.

In addition to Etsy, there's eBay...and countless other sites but you'll want to stick to the sites that have a built-in audience so it's easier to get customers.

If you have a product that is in demand, it's not hard to find customers all over the Internet.

You can set up a fishing blog for a couple of bucks a month and there are plenty of affiliate deals you could make money from. Let me know if you need help.

Like some of the other people here, I would say FC is my hobby, and it's one of the ways I make money. I've also sold a few of my paintings and drawings on the web. That's a good feeling. Nothing better than selling something you create.

I make wood crafts as a hobby, and have made several sales on Etsy. I make enough to pay for materials and some of my time, so I can continue to make what I like. To be successful on Etsy you really have to put in some time and effort to maximize your shop's potential - good photos, titles, descriptions, etc.

Both myself and my husband make a living through our hobbies.  The best part is we get to do them together.  He's always loved working outdoors.  Mowing and landscaping.  So he has a a few lawns he works on regularly.  He and I both do sites like this one.  When we have the opportunity to cash out via amazon cards we snag them.  He invests in his hobby and when we're low on cash he sells what he bought on ebay.  I love to teach and save money.  So I'm now marketing myself in teaching others how to save and make $$$ doing things they do every day.  It's a beautiful thing.

We haven't gone online yet to sell but my daughter and I do have several orders for the cross stitch book marks and key chains we do just from people seeing them.

Making money, as mentioned by another person in the replies, is my hobby.  I work two full time jobs and all but two dollars of this income goes to support my family.  I figure I am entitled to two dollars from eighty hours of work per week. I rarely spend the family on myself...occasionally shoes/haircut but I eat the family's leftovers for lunch. When I have a free moment or two I hit sites like this and have been doing so for the last five or so years. Every cent made has been spent on additional investments. The dividends/interest from these investments beats the amount of money I am making by way of point to clicks and blogs. I continue to do this and as of today have set a new goal for ten years from now that is pretty lofty.

No because I am not that creative.  I have encouraged my sister-in-law to try to sell her crochet work online because she is extryemely creative - she makes absolutely beautiful baby dresses, booties and hats among other things.  Very ornate.

I noticed the more people are using the Facebook Yard Sale to sell stuff you can try that first It might sell better.

I'm an artist, photographer, craftsperson and genealogist.  I have a website, a Zazzle store, a Fine Art America store and I freelance through Fiverr.  I'm considering YardSeller and some other options for physical product and patterns.  It's all good.  :D

I was told by my English teacher in high school that I should seriously consider becoming a writer but I just kinda laughed it off.  I would sure consider it now if I knew of a legit site to go to to find out more about it.  Any suggestions?

I am about to start making soap. I will probably sell gift baskets on Etsy that feature my soap. If it doesn't do well, then I will just make it for friends and family.
