Title: Offering Water
Post by: ktheodos on September 25, 2015, 06:20:24 am
Was in a Mickey D's the other day, and asked for a cup of water....was told I would need to spend $1.00 to buy the cup...thought that was ridiculous and illegal....agreed?

It is not illegal, but I agree that it is pretty ridiculous. I can understand a company wanting to charge for water to recoup the costs of the cup, straw, and even water. I've been to other places that charge a nominal fee for water, but the most I've seen was 25-cents. $1 seems way too much, however.

Wow.  I don't drink soda and I sometimes ask for a courtesy cup of water and I'm never charged for it.  I've been eating more at Burger King than McD's and the same thing.  Never charged once and I've been doing it for years.

I heard they made that rule a few years ago. With all the millions of customers they get, they can afford to give out some free water.

I think it is terrible but I doubt it is illegal.  They used to have little cups they gave to people who asked for water.  I think its awful but they want you to buy an expensive bottle of water or pay for one of their cups.

I only ask for water if I am already there buying food and I have never been charged for it.

I think that is crazy too. I work at a restaurant and I have always given people free water. Ever since the new manager took over she has tried to change that. She hung a sign that says water is 40 cents. What gets me though is she will give every carry out customer that is waiting free soda. So you will give away free soda but not free water? She is a little off, that is for sure. lol.

It is not illegal.  They do not have to give anything away for free.  Usually the cups are only 25 cents if you are charged anything.  Most times if you make a purchase and order water to drink the water and the cup is no charge.

Those cups aren't free.   I can understand charging for the cup.  Not to mention the tons of people who go in and order "water" and then get a fountain drink for free.  Many years ago I went out with a guy (2nd date) and we went to McDonald's.  I ordered a small drink $1.  He ordered a water.  Got a coke.  After we sat down he said "I told them water but got coke.  I don't guess it matters".  Well no, other than you just stole a drink.  Smh.

I think most times if you go in and get ONLY a water they will most likely charge you for the cup.

I'm sure they had way less than a nickle in cost for the cup of water!

Managers do what they want.   People need to start bringing their own water bottle in and filling it at the drink station with water.

That is too bad - we are spoiled with the amount of water we take for granted.  I wouldn't be surprised if more eating establishments start doing the same thing.

Why would it be illegal for them to charge for water?  I know Jack in the Box has smaller courtesy cups just for water.   Weird that McDonald's doesn't have a system in play.  I know some eating establishments, including all at Disney, get the soda for free, but have to pay for the cups.

I traveled all over Europe and every restaurant charged for a glass of water... all but the Hard Rock Cafe in France, which just gave water.    I totally agree that Americans take a lot for granted, I did too, until I traveled around the world.  It's not like it is here everywhere.  Beer was cheaper than water.

I've gotten a cup of ice water from McD's before and did not have to pay anything for it.  Of course I was buying a treat for my grandkids at the time so maybe that's why I wasn't charged.  Charging $1 is ridiculous!

I had the same thing happen to me at pop eye's.
only because my friend was  putting all the orders together in one order instead of all of us individually they did charge us for the water . I understand that they are a business and need to make money but really seems odd :rainbow: :rose: :peace:

It's not illegal for businesses to charge for water as they can do whatever they want to.  But I think it's ridiculous.  Considering how much they charge for other drinks such as sodas, coffee and milkshakes and the price of the food items they could afford to give you a free cup of water.  If this happened to me I would remember them and not go to them again.

You are missing some key info here.  People are so upset because she didn't get a FREE cup of water.  If you order ANY menu item and order a water you are not charged.  But they cannot afford to give a free cup to every person who comes in and asks for one when they do not purchase any thing else. Not to mention at least half of the people who order a "water" go and get a fountain drink.  The OP just went in and wanted a water only.  Nothing else.  So charging for the cup in a norm.  I agree a $1 is a little crazy.  But if I were thirsty I would just order a small drink.  Pay $1.  And go on.

They maybe offering you filtered water and not regular (free) tap water, and so there is cost associated with filtration...

We all realize it’s a tough economy people are dealing the best they can. Yet sometimes they go too far...

Once again the subject is misleading, where do you mention anywhere that someone is offering you water? ::) You state that you will be charged $1 to buy a cup to get water.  Simply buy it or don't buy it and go home and drink it for free or go some place where you don't have to pay for it, GEEZ ::) 8)

It is the manager's discretion, and some restaurants do charge for water.

True.  Usually it is more like 25 cents.  I would assume the cashier didn't know.  I would probably if I were desperate for water have asked for a manager.  And then I could have argued with another teenager. lol

It also majorly depends on your attitude when you go up to the person.  In my job there are certain things I am allowed to do.  And if you are nice to me I am 100% more likely to help you out than if you come up to me demanding and smarting off.  Those people get NOTHING.

the reason that most companies went to this is because the drink dispenser is out on the floor and they cant watch a person every sec to make sure that only water is going in that cup.  i have caught so many people stealing soda this way.

Some places might give it out for free. I guess not here. I do find it to be ridiculous, but you're at the mercy of the place.
