You sample the fruit as you shop? I munch some grapes as I shop at WalMart/Target but I end up not buying any.
-
I'd think so. I've seen some people open a bag or chips or open a bottle of a drink and "sample" the freshness and then just put it back. If you ask me, it's just weird.
-
My take is .. maybe I sample them to see if they are good, and buy them ! I'm not munching as you put it, as i shop ! If your munching with no plans to buy, why not make a sandwich while you're at it, and drink some soda ! yeah i'd call what you're doing stealing! >:(
-
Without a sign that says free samples, it might be stealing.
-
My mom always tasted the grapes before she bought them -- I wondered about that. She didn't walk around the store "munching" on them -- that does seem like stealing.... like opening a bag of chips, walking around the store eating them, then throwing the bag away.
-
My dad back in the 1980's would take us to Pathmark to grocery shop, take a pen from the office supply aisle, take it out of the package and use it on the list, decades later he had a stroke because :The Lord says "Thou shalt not steal !!!"

I go to quik chek buy a quart of milk, open it,pour it into a 44 ounce cup, drain 1/4 of a bottle of Hershey's chocolate syrup into it and take some of their ice too for a nice drink. Then I go into the bathroom and fill my backpack with rolls of tp and paper towels and cleaning supplies, then I run like Forest Gump 10 blocks home. Ya got to make up for the high prices of "Convenience" stores.

Tasting one grape or cherry or something in an open bag I do not think is stealing if you buy the bag. But if you eat them as you go thru the store and don't pay for anything then yes you are a thief. If you eat half the bag and it sells by weight so you only pay for half of what you took then you are stealing. But tasting a couple grapes then buying the bag I wouldn't classify as stealing.

I think that one cherry, or one grape, is acceptable in order to determine if the product is fresh and flavorable and you have possible intent to purchase. Continuing to graze is stealing even if you have intent to purchase a bag of grapes/cherries unless they are sold by the package. If you are purchasing cherries/grapes by weight than continued grazing reduces the weight that you are paying for and the store is making less money. At this point I would say that you are stealing. They used to have Brach's single serve candy in stores so that you could mix and match different candies. The candy (up until last year) was about seven cents for each piece. At one point people were sampling this candy so much that the store put a little box on the display so that people could throw a few coins in to cover the cost. Must not have been too many honest people.

If you get caught pulling off a grape and just eating them and not buying it, yeah that's stealing. I'd see if they were handing out samples to try, but you just pulling off one and eating it is wrong.
-
I think one grape from an open package is reasonable if you're truly evaluating it for purchase. I've been invited to sample grapes by produce section employees, I've even had them insist on cutting open a watermelon or something for me to try. I realize one employee's permission isn't a license to eat anything in any store throughout life, but my point is they WANT you to buy the thing, and if sampling it will make the sale, they have always been welcoming in my experience.
If you're eating as a snack while shopping and then decide you don't feel like buying it, that's not ok. If you make a product any less salable to another customer (by reducing its contents or opening a non-sealable package) you should buy it.
-
I don't know.
-
Accidentally forgetting your water in the bottom of the cart after paying for your groceries?  :-\ :-X :-[ :( :D
-
I always pop a grape or two in my mouth to see if I like 'em or not.... :silly:
-
I'm sure they don't like it, but they do want you to shop there so they don't really say anything.
-
walmart has tons of sample givers so no
-
Yes, I think that would qualify as stealing.
-
If they are giving samples then no it is not stealing. But when you go around sampling things and then not buying it then yes it is stealing. I have had to open a box of Kleenex because I ran out. But I made sure I bought the box. When I go to buy grapes or other veggies I always check them for freshness by gently feelin them for freshness and if they feel soft I just don't buy them.

Getting free samples is one thing, but just eating stuff off the shelves to "sample it" is completely different. I don't touch any groceries until I'm fully checked out.

They do not have tons of sample givers. There may be one every now and then. Maybe a couple times a week. And you get ONE BITE of something. The grapes she scarfs down are not samples. It is no different than the thieves who get doughnuts and eat them without paying for them.

lol. We have done that with the kleenex.
-
Yes, and it would gross me out to see people "sampling" the fruit.
-
i think it is unless you have intent on buying said product but we all have a conscience that works in different ways
-
So for all you thieves, how do you make it right with God ?

I think we figured out there were only a select few that were thieves, I think the rest of us need to say a prayer to help her over come her addiction of stealing grapes at Target/Wally World :glasses-nerdy:  :moneymouth: :glasses-nerdy:

I will try one grape to see if they are sweet. If they are, I will buy them. If not, I don't.
-
i might take one off the vine if im buying the them...but i have me a vine coming along nicely at home now...got some baby grapes..cant wait to eat them straight off the vine

I agree entirely with this opinion. How can it not be stealing to munch away on any items in the store with no intention to buy. The only time I take a grape or cherry is to see if they are sweet and fully ripened and then I generally buy. However, not always. For example, about 1 out of every 4 times I try grapes they turn out to be sour. I don't want to waste my money on those!
-
Yes it is stealing because you have not paid for the item and they charge by weight. If you ask the product manager to sample something and he gives the ok, then it's not stealing.
-
I will get a drink from the cooler and drink it while I shop if I'm thirsty. However I always pay for it afterwards with the rest of my groceries even if it's only half full or empty. I make sure that the cashier is aware of it.
-
Yes, it is stealing. In the retail world it is called Shrink. Shrink is tied into profit/lack of profit and is why employees cry of low wages. i know the first thing you are going to say is a few grapes is not a loss of profit...ok, but what if you say that and the lady behind you and the gentleman behind her and the guy behind him? Unfortunately it is why shopping is also not the same experience it was years ago. You used to be able to walk into a store and shop around and just enjoy an afternoon "out shopping". Now, if you are just walking around a store and just want to enjoy some time out of the house, it is not the same. When you just walk around the store now, you are a flag to security. There is too much mistrust in the retail world and there are valid reasons why.
-
It is "stealing", but stores overlook it to sell.
I don't do that. I don't think it is fair to do that. It is selfish, and gives a bad example to our kids. "I can sneak food, as long it is in small amounts, and have a good excuse....tasting to see if I wanna buy."
Also, those fruits you are sampling are covered with chemicals. They need to be washed when you get home.

Agree - if it's something by weight that you're eating, than yes, it's stealing! If it's like a box of crackers and you open it while in line but pay for the whole thing, not a big deal to me...just weird.

I'd have to say it is stealing. You haven't paid for them and even if you do, the fruit will weigh less when it is rung up at the register. So they are never paid for at all.
-
Yes, stealing. Drives me nuts.
-
I believe that it is, sorry!

Hello! :D :)
I don't know if it is legal or not but it seems dishonest. Always put your self in the owner's shoes and you will know whether it is right or wrong. :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:

Yes it's stealing. But I have a question. How do you go to a store and eat something such as grapes that are loaded on a table at grocery stores? Do you ever wonder how dirty and filthy food like that is? SMDH.
-
If you take a candy bar off the shelf and eat it while you shop and don't pay for it, it's stealing. If you grab an apple and eat while you shop, it's stealing. If you munch grapes while shopping, its stealing.
