I understand that a lot of people in Florida have been preparing for a large hurricane. As I've watched the news I think they're anticipating a category 5 within the next few days.
I live in Utah where things are usually pretty peaceful.
It's tough to comprehend what people and animals go through - at a time like this.
Do you know anyone who lives in Florida?
Have you ever experience a hurricane?
-
i have been trough a couple of hurricanes. the worse was back in 91 bob which i think was cat 2
my brother and his family are on the east coast of fl. hope they will be ok. will feel better when dorian turns north
this is a massive hurricane !feel bad for the bahamas. hope everyone stays safe! :rainbow: :peace:

My brother lives in Miami. Please pray for all the people who lives will change because of the hurricane. I'm praying for no lives lost

Today's forecast is projecting the hurricane will go up the Atlantic coastline which will cause major flooding all along the eastern coast.

They do not have a clue. The last thing I heard is it will not hit Florida. It is going to go up the coast and hit South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. I know SC has already declared a state of Emergency, which I do not even understand since it is still sunny there.
They do not seem to have a clue what this storm is going to do or where it is going to hit. I just read where SC state troopers have already started interstate lane reversals getting people out of the state.
The biggest issue to me seems to be the misinformation and the completely different info being given by every outlet out there. Come on people! Get it together.

It is looking like everyone in the south eastern part of the country could be effected. This thing is massive. But that is what they said a couple years ago about one suppose to hit Florida. They were saying it is reaching categories they do not even have yet. And it did not do anything. Hit at like a 2 or something. This is why people don't leave, evacuate, and don't take the warnings seriously.
And some people have to work and can not just take off and leave.

Honestly its impossible to predict an actual hurricanes strength til it gets close to land because sometimes the storm weakens before it gets to land or veers off missing the predicted target completely

I thought it was suppose to hit Sunday night in Florida. SO I had that wrong. But from what I am seeing from some sources it is picking up strength. I do have sort of extended family in South Carolina. He lives pretty much where his back yard is the beach. I am sure he has done vacated. He always boards up and leaves when told to evac.
It just seems that today it is hard to get any info. I am following the hurricane site on twitter but they do not seem to be giving new info. If I lived in the area I would want some info.

Yep unfortunately during hurricane season I live in a Florida town about 30 minutes from Daytona Beach. Yippee hate hurricane season.
-
No, I don't know anyone that lives in Florida and have never experienced a hurricane. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the path of Dorian.

Do you live there all the time or just during Hurricane season? You statement is confusing. If it is just during hurricane season I think I'd rethink my living arrangements. And live there during non hurricane season. lol
I guess if I grew up there I would not want to move cause it is basically your life and you are use to it. I have actually been thinking about ways you could build a hurricane proof home.

How about do trumpy suggestion. Nuke it cause yeah that works right. He is a idiot.

So are people who try to start a political argument on a serious thread and make fun of people calling them names. There is no proof he said this as it was supposedly a private conversation. Sounds to me like more fake news.

I talked to my brother. He boarded up his Windows and he and his wife are driving up to our home. I'm so happy to see him (it's been almost 1 year), but I'm sorry it's because of the hurricane.

Have you ever seen a video of where the do the reverse traffic and shut the interstate down and have the traffic heading away from the state in both directions? There is on where they are doing in from South Carolina. It is scary and cool at the same time to see it.

The "idiots" are the ones who hear that story reported and automatically assume that it is 100% truth that Trump wants to drop a nuke bomb on a hurricane - because... Hey! It was reported by a news agency and so it HAS to be true. They are so absolutely trustworthy in their reporting and would never say anything untrue or unverified.
I have no idea what was said behind closed doors and neither does anyone else who was not there.
To everyone in Dorian's direct (or indirect) path, including my daughter right on the Florida Atlantic coast - stay safe and be smart. We are praying for you.

A news agency that hates him. lol

I saw this morning where they told people in Florida if you ignored the warnings to LEAVE and decided to stay and ride out this storm - Not to bother calling 911 and if you do your plea for help will likely be ignored.
I agree with this 100%. They have been talking about this for over a week. Telling people you need to leave.
If people decide to stay they "you are on your own" no one should have to put their life in danger to rescue someone who decides to be stupid.
-
I know several people who live in Dorian's path, either in Florida or the Carolinas or Georgia. I have only experienced one really bad hurricane myself when I was a little girl living in Massachusetts. The brook behind our house ran over its banks and flooded our basement. We got it cleaned out pretty quickly, though, and were able to continue living in the house.

I agree 100%. They had way enough time to get out. If you decide to stay you're on your own. Why should any first responders risk their lives because you were too ridiculous to leave when you had the chance.

I just saw this again thru an alert sent to my phone and what I am seeing is showing it is NOT even going to hit Florida and just a brush with one of the Carolinas.
-
My family lives in Savannah and most of them came to Atlanta. My younger brother stayed, he always does. Please pray for them also.
-
I am thankful that storm was not hit in Florida. Hopefully it wont hurt people or make damage to properties.

Which is part of the problem/reason why people don't evacuate. On Thursday or Friday I think the projection was a direct hit on the area where my daughter is at. Of course, so much can change in just a day when the storm is still that far out, let alone four days. Now she is outside of the immediate danger zone and doesn't need to evacuate. Should she have evacuated or not? I would have preferred that she had, but if she does evac and then it misses them completely and she is not around to show up for work (in restaurant management) then she faces an entirely new set of problems.
-
We do have a friend in Florida but I don't know if my hubby has called and checked on her yet. I will keep all the people in the hurricane's path in my thoughts and prayers
-
I am glad I don't live in Florida and have to experience this several times per year.... I do have a great friend in Florida that I worry about at times like this. I personally have never experienced anything other than a tornado.
-
It's still chugging along down south. I'm in Virginia and they forecast rain for us. Hope everyone will be ok.

Definitely agree,

I feel very sorry for those people in the Bahamas who have been devastated by this hurricane. Have you seen those pictures? Those are little islands with mostly people who have little to begin with. They will definitely need help. Hopefully, a number of countries will band together and help provide the aid that is needed. Thankfully, Dorien veered from the US mainland!

The Bahamas is not a poor place. It is one of the most popular tourist places in the world. Yes, they will need help and they are already getting it. People were already "helping" before it even hit. They only pictures I saw didn't look that bad. I was surprised. But I have only seen a couple.
-
U have a family member who lives in Orlando, and they are prepared. My brother lives on the Florida Panhandle and they say it is good over there, but please pray for all the people on the coast. I live in Northern Virginia and we got the tale of Irma a few years ago and lost power for 3 days.
-
We are forecast to get remnants on Friday. They closed schools and are using some of them for shelters. Hope everyone remains safe and the storm goes out to sea. I usually evaluate but I'm staying put this year since we are not directly in the path.

There is still a large segment of the population which does not have a lot of money. They largely survive on the tourist industry. I don't know what pics you have seen but I have seen a great deal of devastation with 20 dead. They think they will be finding a considerable amount more people deceased.

JaniceSW I totally agree with you. The pictures have been all over the news and it doesn't matter if they have a lot a money or not it is still devastating. I cannot image losing everything and having to start over. I always try to donate to these causes even if it is not a lot. I know I would want someone to pay it forward if I was in this same situation.

It's the same way here. There is a large percentage of people without a lot of money. There is so much fake news you don't know what to believe anyway. I thought a hurricane was suppose to have wiped them out last year. And they have already rebuilt? I would not live on an island like that. You would think there would be more info on sites like Yahoo but there isn't. Hardly any mention at all.

It actually does matter. When Katrina came thru a woman at my church her sister lived in that area and lost her home. She (the sister, not the one who lost it all) was at church crying and wanting us to give her money. Then she turns around and says she was HEAVILY HEAVILY HEAVILY insured. She got more than 3 times what her house was worth from insurance and other places. So no I did not feel too sorry for her. Nor do I think her sister should have been asking us to give her money.
I am all for helping people but not when they have 10 times what I do and are going to get thousands to millions in insurance money. I know a guy who moved to my area after the same Hurricane. He came here after he got his insurance money. He came out of it stinkin RICH!

I have 1 cousin and 2 family "steps" family living in 3 west coast areas. The steps are all prepared. My cousin was here for our yearly reunion and was just ready to leave and go back but they decided to wait until it's over. They don't fly, they drive, and he's in his early 80s.
-
I live in North Carolina and we have a lot of hurricanes, some bad and some not so bad. Last year it was Florence and that one was bad. Right now I'm just waiting to start feeling the effects because I live close of interstate 95.
-
We had some wind gusts and some rain. After every storm there is at least one branch in the yard, but we were really blessed this time and only had a few leaves scattered around. Hope everyone is safe.
-
Having worked in law enforcement and emergency services for many years, it is so much easier to have people evacuate sooner than wait until it is to late. You always feel so helpless when people call (who have waited to long) and want help and you have to say sorry, we have to wait until conditions are safer for us to help you.

Do you really think Trump said that? Perhaps stop reading & believing an unsubstantiated claim by some unnamed source just because it fits your personal narrative even though it so outlandishly stupid. Free your mind.

East Coast dodged Gabrielle - turned North!! Good Job! Of course having lived through several of these I am happy!
Another one is forming, "don't put your guns away yet" (94L) stationary, but 1011MB could get nasty

I have answered a similar question before. Everyone says that cyclones spin one way in the northern hemisphere and the opposite way in the southern hemisphere. That is not true. They spin in exactly the same direction in both the northern and southern hemispheres. They only appear to spin in different directions because you’re looking at them upside down in the southern hemisphere.

We live in Georgia and have been through a couple.
