Internet Home Pages
« on: March 23, 2020, 06:34:48 am »
There use to be a home page you could use on your computer where you put widets (that you choose and arrange) so you control what you see.  I can't remember what it was.  Any chance any of you know what I am talking about?  I am sick of yahoo for a home page.  I am tired of seeing the coronavirus constantly.  There are 40 or so headlines on Yahoo and 39 of them are lies about this virus.  I can't take it any more!  Any suggestions on home pages other than "google" which has nothing on it?  :-\

I like Bing.  When I turn my computer on I get a nice beautiful picture of anything but news.  After I log in.  I don't have a home page in the sense of like yahoo or msn.

I also have Bing as a home page and I like it.  There is a news feed on the bottom but you can turn that off.  It has a different picture everyday.  Sometimes they are animated. (Halloween, Christmas, Independence day )

You can customize the Google page with different themes and background images, so it's not just a boring white page. You can set the images to change daily too.

Yeah, I noticed that about Yahoo. NY Times, WaPo, and other definitely left wing sites. When I open my home page (using Windows 10), Yahoo pops up as my search page above FVD where I put my most used sites on it. Click on any of them and it takes me directly to that site. When I want to do a regular search on the home page, I usually click on the Home button in the task bar and get Google. My Google page shows a few of my most used sites under the search block. I think I can add more, but not sure. Never tried it.

Can you add topics to see?  What I used a while back you could add stuff like cat pics or dog pics and that section had a diff pic every day.  You could add news sources if you wanted to see that.  SO in other words if I used that I could have a widget that would go to my email log in and skip the home page so I don't see the news topics.  It is starting to grate on my nerves.

I may look in to this. gwilson31, thanks for your input too.  I am just sick of this.  Almost every story on Yahoo is something about this virus or something disgusting like a basically naked pic of miley cyrus. smh  I just want to change it.  I was thinking what I used before was google but if you can customize google so you have an actual home page with stuff on it besides a search box I can't figure out how to do it.

It seems like you're referring to Google Chrome. You can customize the little icons when you're logged in.
Opinion: 1) a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter 2) belief stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge
This is the internet, learn to let people have opinions. And don't be so sensitive.  8)

This is NOT what I am talking about.  It was a home page and had what they called "widgets".  And it looked just like Yahoo or MSN. Except you see what you choose.  If you had the one for cat pics that little square had a diff cat pic in it every day.  They had all diff animals widgets. You could get them for news, local tv stations, whatever had a presence on the internet. I have not seen it in a long time so I assume it is no longer around.  So when you open the internet it looked like a regular home page with content but YOU choose the content. So you can actually get online without have 40 plus coronavirus stories shoved in your face. I am tired of seeing it.

I am fluent in HTML, so I use Iframe's to include any image that updates daily on my page if I want one, but my page usually just has links to the websites I want to use every day. One of those is of course YouTube where I can search for any music, funny cat pictures or anything else I want to see at the moment.

I'm not sure I've heard of that, but it does sound a bit familiar. I would try customizing Chrome or using Bing, though, if what you're looking for no longer exists.

Like everyone else, I'm not familiar with what you  had.  It sounds interesting though.  If you ever figure it out, let us all know. :)

I am familiar with HTML as well.  And had thought about doing something like this although it is not what I am talking about. I think what I used for a while is no longer available. I am not looking for cat pictures. That was just an example. Something I remembered seeing.  And something people are sharing right now, animal pictures in general, to avoid the virus topic.
